Israel - About 1,000 ultra-Orthodox consumers will be leaving Dor Gas, a subsidiary of Dudi Wiessman's Dor Alon group.

The boycott follows an ad in the religious paper Hamodia, which is leading the battle against Wiessman. The ad called on the religious public to cut off ties with Dor Gas, to protest the fact that the convenience store chain AM:PM, which Wiessman also owns, operates on Shabbat. "The first step will involve about 1,000 customers who will stop buying, and we will continue to advertise this matter until thousands of Haredi consumers advise the company that they wish to do the same," the organizers said.

The organizers added that they are now in contact with competing gas suppliers, in hopes of entering into contracts as a group.

A representative of the rabbinical Committee for the Sanctity of Shabbat told the Hamodia's management forum that Wiessman had already agreed to the rabbis' demand to close the outlets on the Sabbath, and that as a result of the boycott, all new outlets are closed for business on Saturday.

Do all the Haredim that are going to boycott agree to buy gas only from this company in the future?

We'll boycott you if you open on Shabbos, and buy across the street if your competitor is cheaper.

Doesn't sound kosher to me.

What happens when his gas becomes cheaper due to his eventual supply? Will people start to re-think the boycott?

Egged works on Shabbos. I saw it myself yet all the Rabbis who are behind these boycotts use Egged.

Israair flies on Shabbos in Israel yet no one ever suggested boycotting them even while boycotting El Al.

The train goes on Shabbos yet no one boycotts them.

I don't get it-What does the fact that he's open on Shabbos (in a different business yet) have to do with his gas company?

If he decides not to eat kosher or put on Tefilin, they wouldn't boycott I'm sure. Or if he doesn't keep Shabbos in his house, but keeps his other business closed, would that be any better?

It's his own private business and has nothing to do with Chareidim or their relationship with his gas business.

Why don't these people worry about themselves and their own lives instead of trying to interfere in the lives of others. Last I checked, Israel is a free country. In a free country one should be able to open their business whenever they want! These people need jobs and a life.

Good for them. Lets just hope the competitor doesnt open his stores on Shabbos or the Chareidim will have to go back to cooking over wood like in the Alta Heim. Wait a minute- they already dress like they are still living in the Alter Heim, why not cook like that also?

It is a right of people to organize and cause a change of events or to pursue collective bargaining etc. The same way it is a free country to do what you want, it is the same way a free country to collectively organize boycott the company to force the owner to close his business on Shabbos. And yes there is a difference in openly defying Shabbos by having your store open (which also provides other people chance to violate Shabbos) and personal observance.

The owner doesn't have to be worried about the boycotte if he is the guy of principles. He should state that he is not going to be blackmailed and continue on. But I am sure he will give in, because he is a "greedy businessmen". But here I see people are willing to see the issue one sided.

They should already be boycotting Dor Gas because Dor is who supplies our enemies the Philistines in Arab-occupied Gaza.
