Wednesday’s shooting was a rare incident along the normally quiet frontier between Israel and Egypt.

The two countries signed a peace accord 35 years ago and have close security cooperation.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack, but Islamic militants in the lawless Sinai Peninsula have attempted to carry out attacks against Israel in recent years.

The militants have also carried out deadly attacks against the Egyptian military, which has been trying to crackdown on their activity in the desert.

The military said the soldiers were moderately wounded and were evacuated to a hospital.
