The U.S. attorney’s office announced a civil lawsuit and proposed settlement Thursday. It said the Kiryas Joel Poultry Processing Plant Inc. admitted violating the federal Clean Water Act between 2008 and 2012.

The company agreed to pay a $330,000 fine, devise a corrective plan and record its future operations.

An official with the Environmental Protection Agency said the plant in Orange County disposed of chicken parts directly into storm drains and polluted two tributaries of the Ramapo River.

The settlement will not be final for 30 days to allow public comment

Now I understand why the drinking water in KJ tasted like chickens! And now the price of KJ chickens will go up again as if they aren’t expensive enough!

They should be thankful that they were not tried in Iowa.

This is a bit oversimplified; also, they’re conflating two separate allegations here.

The article at the Mid-Hudson News gives more details: one, they let contaminated ground water into the rivers (i.e. the tzoias oifos was all over the ground, it rained, and the rain washed it into the storm drains and then into the river); and two, they sent the actual waste products down the sewer to the sewage plant, but at a volume that was too high for the plant to handle, thereby overloading it and causing it to overflow into the river.

This is bad enough, but the VIN article is making it sound like they deliberately threw the waste into the rivers, which they did not do.

As someone who lives 2 blocks from this, this is bad news. To live there and smell the chickens 24 7 is horrible, they should not be allowed in a residential area.

And they want to open another much larger plant in Ramapo. More pollution and ruining more water for profits. Another chillul hashem. They are destroying mother earth by not following laws everyone else must follow.
