Melbourne, Australia - Angry family members have approached Jewish Care in Melbourne over the presence of messianic Jews serving as volunteers at the Smorgon Family Nursing Home in St Kilda Road.

“I am appalled that this was allowed to happen,” Terkel told The AJN. “How they can allow them into the Smorgon unit to be with people who are near the end of their life is just appalling,” said Suzanne Terkel.

Rabbi Meir Shlomo Kluwgant, the spiritual head of Jewish Care, said he was aware of at least one messianic Jew working as a volunteer with the organisation and said the matter would shortly come to a “satisfactory outcome”.

However, he said, “I am not aware of even a shred of evidence to suggest there was any proselytising taking place at Jewish Care. If there was, I would deal with it immediately.”

Jewish Care faces a dilemma in resolving the issue because it is an equal-opportunity employer. And while volunteers are not strictly classified as “workers”, they can claim to be discriminated against, depending on the circumstances of their termination.

The director of Cult Counselling Australia, Raphael Aron, said Celebrate Messiah used a variety of sophisticated techniques to spread its message, which he described as “false and misleading”.

He urged Jewish Care to deal urgently with the matter.

“The fact that two people who are associated with this organisation are working at Jewish Care is certainly a reason for serious concern. It would be naive and dangerous to assume that the fact they have chosen to volunteer their time to a Jewish organisation is merely a coincidence. I believe there is a clear agenda.”

“In relation to Jewish Care, the fact that the clientele are elderly, and possibly vulnerable people, highlights the seriousness of this issue.

Many of the patients in the aged-care facility are lonely and some may not be able to fully comprehend the message this group promotes.

“The problem also highlights the need for greater scrutiny by all Jewish organisations in their recruitment of staff,” he said.

Oy, my poor grandmother needed a little bit of help to shop and tidy up. Because my mother works, we were very grateful that Federation provided a home help aide to take my grandmother shopping once a week. Where did she take her? To Church!!

Then my father was sick in the hospital and Federation sent over a social worker to help my mother deal with the tragedy. The social worker was a Jew for Jesus and we could not get rid of her. She brought her "Rabbi"/minister to pray over my father.

I wish this were an unusual story, but missionaries seek out jobs in nursing homes, schools, Jewish homes etc in order to missionize to Jews.

It's not fair that they took that name. Every Jew is "messianic" - we daven for moshiach every day. The people in question are ovdei avodah zarah, which is neither messianic nor jewish. Hashem does NOT have divisions or parts!

These sly folks take these positions for this purpose. Be Vigilant!. It is no different than if you hear a scout leader molesting young boys, or a foot fetishist working at a sho store. People like this are going to place themselves where they "need" to be.
