A group of AIDS activists held a news conference Monday to criticize Cuomo for his plan to quarantine travelers who have had contact with Ebola patients.

The activists drew parallels between Ebola and AIDS and said broad quarantines could stigmatize people with Ebola.

But Cuomo said Tuesday that the situations are different. He said he is trying to balance the need for doctors and nurses to travel to West Africa to care for Ebola patients with public health concerns in New York.

Cuomo spoke at a benefit for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

John honored Cuomo for his plan to end the AIDS epidemic in New York by 2020.

If his father had treated AIDS the way he’s treating Ebola, we’d be better off now.
