Now some of those stories are being shared on an interactive documentary by Sandy Storyline.
The New York Public Library says it is showing the interactive display at the mid-Manhattan Library.
Visitors can listen to a selection of firsthand accounts collected over the past two years. They can also add their cell phone images of the storm to the ongoing project.
Personal narratives, photos and video can also be submitted online at sandystoryline.com.
The exhibition will move to the New Dorp Library on Staten Island on Nov. 11.
Sandy Storyline describes itself as a participatory documentary that collects and shares stories about the impact of Sandy on neighborhoods, communities and lives.
Wednesday marks the second anniversary of the storm.
