Monsey, NY – Despite postal tracking data showing that it was delivered, a Monsey man is claiming he never received the rare 16th-century Hebrew Bible he purchased from an eBay seller in Virginia.

HAARETZ.com (http://bit.ly/1xLbqGO) reports that Monsey’s Jacob Gestetner maintains he never received the $7,000 Bible he purchased on eBay from artifact dealer Gene Albert, despite post office records showing that it was delivered on October 10.
According to the standard eBay contract, Mr. Albert must now refund the entire $7,000 to Mr. Gestetner.
A disgruntled Albert said Gestetner either “has it or it was stolen from his mailbox.”
“Either way it’s gone and I’m out the money,” Albert said of the Bible that contains entries dating back to the 1540s.
Albert said he typically checks the “Signature Required” box when shipping such items, but forgot to in this particular instance.
Gestetner declined comment, calling it a private matter.
File a police report regarding theft call the usps business center to investgate
Let’s simply say I wouldn’t accept US Ppstal Service records as gospel. I’ve had “Priority Mail with tracking” packages vanish _inside_ the Post Office. I’ve had Certified Return Receipt envelopes that are shown as leaving one Post Office heading to another, and then never getting any further. I’ve had material that was “out for delivery” that vanished.
– and trying to get the USPS to investigate is next to hopeless.
Hence those stories, like the one last month, of a postal worker who simply grabbed up _twenty thousand_ pieces and stored them in his apartment.
Ok, if one piece had disappeared they wouldn’t get excited. But there were probably hundreds of complaints about those missing 20,000. But nothing happened.
Or simply the unmentionable , unfortunately.
I’ve had same issues with carriers leaving packages at the door with just a ring of the bell but not wait for anyone to come to the door. I’ve had “missing” packages even though the vendor sent an email claiming it was delivered “today at x-time”.
When I went to look after arriving home from work, no package.
When a neighbor witnessed the thief taking his package from his doorstep, I decided to report my incident to the police. They refused to take a report saying it was not MY item stolen as the carrier was responsible for leaving it unattended.
The entire story very fishy:
1. A rare one of a kind bible from the 1500’s is worth substantially more than the mere $7,000. Just look at any auction house including Sotheby’s and you will find its worth a minimum ranging in the $200,000 to $300,000 range. $7,000 is a joke.
2. Never ever does anyone send such an item uninsured. Its simply a farce
3. Never is such a thing sent without requiring a signature. ( They claim they forgot to ask for it)
There are simply too many incredulous things in this story to believe that this seller is saying the truth. Even if this package were ever sent, I bet it was an empty package and that’s why it wasn’t insured because the seller would have been asked to show it’s contents.
Shucks, if it was so blessed, who would send it in the pagan trial team of mail carriers! I would think that some more justice is necessary! What a farce!
how does one FORGET to check the signature required box on a $7000 item shipped – was it ever sent?
I am an online bookseller myself. I don’t understand how a dealer would send a $7,000 item via the postal service. It should have been sent FedEx, insured, signature required.
I had very BAD experience with the Local upstate US mail delivery service many times.
I showed the Post office superviser how Priority Mail box with a tracking # as proof of delivery bar code, was droped at another address. the usps tracking system says that its delivered, and I am running around for 2 days to all neighbors on the block until I found it at a strange wrong Address near their Mailbox on the sidewalk all crushed.
it happened 3 times in July.
Don’t believe the post office!!
There’s such a thing as insurance when mailing a package.
The sender can insure a parcel for any amount he/she so desires!
Sounds very suspicious that a package valued at $7000 was sent WITHOUT any insurance!
Wouldn’t something so valuable be insured?
Perhaps someone wants to buy a Hagadah that was used by Avraham Avinu at his Seder for only $500. I’ll drop it in the mail right away.
1. Why on earth would he send it U.S. Postal Service instead of FedEx or UPS?
2. Who doesn’t insure a $7,000 item? And “No Signature Required”?!
