New York, NY - After a spike in construction accidents in recent months, the City Council has passed several measures intended to increase safety on building sites.

The package of bills passed today includes one that would allow buildings inspectors to classify maintenance violations as immediately hazardous. Those violations include problems such as loose material and debris, unsafe storage of combustible materials and falling hazards.

Another bill requires regular structural inspections on buildings that have been weakened by fire or other damaging elements.

A third bill requires better monitoring of retaining walls, mandating structural inspections every five years.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg is expected to sign the bills into law.

In New York City, construction crane accidents have killed at least nine people since March.

comments - arrow The problem with the cranes, was corrupt building inspectors. So what does this city council do? Give them more power so that they can harass the honest businessman and put him out of buisness on a whim.

They completely ignore the fact that if the stakes are higher there will be more corruption.

Police the inspectors make sure that they inspected what they say they inspected, not just tick marks on paperwork. They have enough power.

Just remember, if the landlord dont make money, the buildings will become trash. a replay of the 70's. Good luck Mr. Mayor and City COuncil.

comments - arrow What a great way to increase corruption and extort more money for Bloomberg's pet elitist projects. There is not a single building in NYC that could pass an inspection if the inspector is looking for an excuse to find violations. Even if the violation is dismissed, who will reimburse the owner for the expense, time, and trouble of fighting the violation. NYC seems to be getting less and less hospitable.
