Israel - The Knesset has approved a bill underlining the independence of the ultra-Orthodox yeshivas and supplying them with funds without subjugating them to the Education Ministry and its teaching curriculum. The bill was passed by a majority of 39 MKs, and was opposed by just six.

According to the new law, the ultra-Orthodox community, as a "unique cultural group", will be permitted to operate post-primary learning institutions as long as the values of those institutions do not contradict Israel's values as a Jewish and democratic State.

The Education Ministry will not pedagogically inspect the yeshivas on issues that are not technical, yet the yeshivas will receive funds equal to 60% of those received by learning institutions that are loyal to its curriculum.

Education Minister Yuli Tamir, who supported the bill, explained that "this law regulates a process that for a long time had been conducted under the table. It regularizes the budget in a clear fashion… It is the lesser evil."

Perfect article to lead off this rainy Thursday morning. It's fair; it's fine. We get the money; we stay independant. What could could be better.
BUT hold onto your hats guys. You pushed the Satmar/neturei-karte hot button. And here come the crazies.

Now we see why dialogue is so difficult. "Moishe-Willyburger" states his opinion - and then proceeds to declare anyone who has another opinion as "crazy". Two simple observations:
1) the term "ultra-orthodox" has really been "dummied" down - in the 60's and before, a much small group of people were referred to as "ultra" orthodox - and not taking money from the Medina for their schools was an essential element in that equation.
2)Receipt of money always carried hooks - always binds the giver and recipient - sometimes legally, always spiritually. The seforim are full of this concept.
Proud to be a crazy!

They are still being treated as second-class citizens. They are getting 40% less than those who attend the secular school system.

They would like to cut them off completely, but they don't want to start a civil war YET!

I guess the Arabs Intafada is having some beneficial effect. It prevents the seculars from going forward with their plans to crush the religious community completely.

The 40% reduction is the cost for staying clear of the State's curriculum. It's fair

You must work for the Israeli Education Ministry. Here is what they think of Hareidi education:

"...Meretz Chairwoman Zahava Gal-On claimed that "this is a scandalous law. For the first time ultra-Orthodox ignorance is being funded lawfully...(Source YNET).

So, you see, we're just a bunch if ignoramuses in the eyes of the left-wing radicals, like Yuli Tamir, who run the Education Ministry.

Yes, ignorance and ignoramus are inflammatory words. But honestly, the majority of yidden coming to my office door from Eretz Yisroel have no - absolutely no - skills to apply towards making a living. Even my grandparents could tailor and fix shoes. It is a chiyuv to teach one's son an "umnus" - or to provide him an education which will teach him one so he can support his wife and family. The last time I looked at a kesuva that was still an obligation.

Dear Anonymous:

Here is the rest of Gal-On's quote--"I support cultural autonomy, but if a community requests State funds it must be willing to honor and respect its civil and cultural values..."

So, you see. It's not about learning how to make a living. It's about "civil and cultural (secular, atheist, anti_Torah) values."

The left wing wants to go into the Yeshiva curriculum to brainwash the students in their ideology.

Dear Deepthinker:

I agree with you 100%- I am the author if athis morning's anonymous 10:47. I was addressing another problem which is the terrible economic situation of our brothers in Eretz Yisroel who are receiving no occupational education. Yes - parnosoh is in the hands of HKB"H - but chazal said (in modern terminology) we must prepare ourselves for the marketplace.

What a mistake! This could have forced the leaders to have no choice but to have teachers for secular studies so that these people could for once become self sufficient!! What a mixed up country.

Deepthinker? Is that a serious name? These people are plenty brainwashed already by their leaders. They don't go to the bathroom without their rabbi's say so. You actually think that receiving secular education is a form of brainwashing? Why shouldn't they learn the same as everyone else? Until that community builds a time machine and goes back to the dark ages where they so badly want to be, YES, they should be forced to learn about the cultural values of the world they live in.
