If convicted, the perpetrator may be sentenced up to two years in prison. "He defaced the gravestones at twelve tombs. After pushing out the protective grating on the chapel he got inside where he also defaced a gravestone," Kosice police spokeswoman Jana Demjanovicova said.
Attacks of vandals on Jewish cemeteries are not unique in Slovakia. In April, the police caught three youths who defaced the well-known mausoleum of Rabbi Chasam Sofer in Bratislava.
Many attacks on Jewish cemeteries are perpetrated by neo-Nazis.
The Jewish community in Slovakia lists almost 700 cemeteries.
