Stamford Hill, London – Rabbi Nochum Rosenberg of Brooklyn, New York, and a controversial figure in its Williamsburg-neighborhood Chasidic community, was physically accosted this evening by dozens of angry Chasidim in London’s Stamford Hill, after he visited today that community to assist in a private matter.

Seeing a hostile situation about to erupt out of control, Rabbi Rosenberg managed to flee to a passing police car, which carried him away to safety. He is currently being held under protection of the Met, London’s police force, until his departure and return to the U.S.
Rabbi Rosenberg is well-known for helping establish mikvaos all over the world over the past 20 years. His notoriety has spiked in recent months, however, due to his newly-adopted personal crusade against an internal communal problem which he claims goes ignored and untreated in the Orthodox community: molestation of children.
His advice/support hotline and call-in phone show, which he claims draws 10,000 listeners, has labeled specific prominent rabbis and educators as perpetrators, earning him a ban by several dozen New York rabbonim a few weeks ago on grounds of unnecessarily vulgar and graphic language, not to mention exposure of otherwise reputable individuals.
Mr. Rosenberg appeared a couple of weeks ago on the Jewish talk radio show by Zev Brenner talklinecommunications.com, where he vowed he will not stop his crusade despite a ban against him.

Our rabbonim would have to agree that there is a molestation problem in the community. Even if we believe the numbers are not too great, that is not a consolation for those who have been victimized or are at risk of being molested. The community does a great job in protecting the perpetrators while there is zero protection for the victims. Someone who makes a complaint is bound to become a pariah, and is more likely to get punished for daring to accuse. Meanwhile, the accused gets protected by everyone.
Our Rabbonim will routinely address the situation in a general manner, noting that there is already a psak that the molester is a “rodeyf”, and that all forms of action can be taken against him in accordance with halacha. The trouble is that there is no application of it. When a Rav is presented with a case of Rabbi Ploni having done ***** to a student, the halacha of “rodeyf” is nearly never enacted. The victim is not believed, and no investigation is ever launched until it comes to the attention of law enforcement authorities. However, Oy Vey! One cannot report to the secular authorities – it’s mesira. So the victims continue on with either their silence and pain, or they risk bringing shame and rejection to themselves and their families by making the accusation.
Yes, there are false reports, and these are very destructive. But we err too far the other way, and the perpetrators are getting away with murder.
I do not know Nachum Rosenberg, and I only know of his work from the media and word-of-mouth. I do not know if he is conducting this mission in ways that are appropriate. But the Rabbonim who disapprove of his activities are doing nothing to accomplish the safety we need in ways that are halachically acceptable. I am not sticking up for Mr. Rosenberg, but I lay the responsibility at the feet of the Rabbonim who sweep this problem under the rug continually.

Unfortunatly the rabonim have, and are cotinuing to do absoloutly nothing about the REAL issue of child molestation in our moisdes. I’m speaking of close personel expirience of a family member of mine that was molested, and is currently fighting with the Moised to throw the molester out. To all the people out there making light of this subject matter, You should never know what this does to a child, but do your children a favor and educate yourselves on this horrendous issue, you will be singing a different tune once you do.
