New York – UN Condemns Deadly Terror Attack On Jerusalem Synagogue

New York – The United Nations late Wednesday became latest international body to denounce Tuesday’s deadly terror attack on a synagogue in Jerusalem, with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council (UNSC) issuing statements of condemnation.

“The Secretary-General strongly condemned the attack yesterday in a synagogue in Israel which claimed five lives and injured several persons. He extended his condolences to the families of the victims and wished the injured a speedy recovery,” said the statement, which was read to reporters at the UN headquarters in New York by Ban’s spokesman, Stephane Dujarric.

Two Palestinians armed with a meat cleaver and a gun killed five people at the Kehilat Bnei Torah synagogue before being shot dead by police.

“The Secretary-General condemns all acts of violence against civilians,” said Dujarric in reading Ban’s statement.

“Attacks against religious sites in Jerusalem and the West Bank point to an additional dangerous dimension to the conflict which reverberates far beyond the region. The steadily worsening situation on the ground only reinforces the imperative for leaders on both sides to make the difficult decisions that will promote stability and ensure long-term security for both Israelis and Palestinians,” the statement from Ban added.

Meanwhile, the UNSC late Wednesday also strongly condemned the “despicable terrorist attack” at the synagogue in the capital’s Har Nof neighborhood that lead to the deaths of four rabbis and a police officer.

In a statement, the council members extended their sympathies to the families of the victims of the deadly attack and denounced all violence of the sort seen in the attack, stressing the unjustifiable nature of terrorism “regardless of its motivation.”

At the same time, the UNSC noted the recent flare in regional tensions and called on both the Israelis and Palestinians to “take immediate steps to restore calm.”
