New York City - Don't you hate when you're walking through an airport, dying for a hot dog or a potato knish with not a one in sight? Us too! So we were thrilled to find these vending machines on a recent trip through JFK's Terminal 4.

To the left, the frankfurter dispenser had kosher dogs ($4.50), while the Hot Nosh machines had all sorts of goodies, from cheese pizza to onion rings to knishes (around $4 each). Surprisingly, the gizmos didn't stink like fry oil!

But the best part? The machines advertise that they're open for business 24/6. Nothing like a religiously observant vending machine.

these are NOT shaboss observant ...
if you look at the details on the company website they write 24/6 just because of the joke of it, because it's kosher
but it really DOES work on Shabbos

not that i think this is a very big deal or so

ANON MORIE VERBOSI
NO ONE IS FORCING U TO BUY HOTDOGS AT THE AIRPORT YOU CAN BRING YOUR OWN FOOD
I DONT THINK AFTER PAYING ANNNUAL RENT TO THE AIRPORT AUTHORITIES THAT THE OWNER IS MAKING MORE PROFIT THEN YOUR LOCAL FAST FOOD JOINT

Why not charge. It's a niche market and people need to come and restock the machines. They also need to pay for the machines and electricity. you also need to see that its a chesed as well that you can eat kosher on the way. If you thiknk its too much then don't go to restaurants or pay $2 for a soda at woodbury, and why do you drive just take a bike to work. Everything has it's price!

WOW! If the machine would work on shabbos would it play AF music? Hm.....lets not get carried away with this nonsense, it belongs to a goy, and he wants YOUR Yiddishe gelt. You have noway to find out if it is acctually true, unless you fly on shabbos, and then you dont need the machine anyways...lol.

What is wrong if the machine works on Shabbos? IIRC, Keilim are not listed among Shorcho, Chamorcho, etc.

I met one of the people who started this idea. He's a great guy. His idea was to bring Kosher food to anywhere USA. So that if you're stranded in an airport in yehupitz, you could have something hot to eat. $4.00 for a hot dog is not expensive. Kosher delight in Brooklyn is not that much cheaper. Check out the non-kosher hot dogs in the airport and you will be suprised.

Funny thing, when a Snapple in an airport costs $3.00 no one says anything. The same Snapple drink bought down the block from the airport costs 1.25-1.50, but when a guy has a great idea for kosher food everyone starts to wonder, why is he charging so much??? Give us all a break! The vending machines are not a substitute for your own food, its for when bringing your own food is not an option, or when you forgot your own food.

How it works. From what I was told the vending machines are really freezers with a warm-up flash oven. So the hotdog is double wrapped and frozen. when someone selects the hot dog it drops into a flash oven that heats it up in under two minutes. Pretty cool. No?

It's true! I myself was there and bought from that machine. My family was starving and I decided to surprise them with this mini hot meal. It was good but expensive. I wouldn't recommend this only in an emergency.

I find it truly remarkable that someone comes up with this fantastic idea to make Kosher food available in places that it previously was not and someone can come up with such a ridiculous statement to attack them.

If you don't like the prices, don't buy it. Why don't you take some time and analyze the fact that the costs of running such a machine are high as well instead of mocking the Torah by using unrelated statements to attack people. Although you may try to look "frum" by throwing in Yiddish phrases your words don't outweigh your actions and I think your true colors were shown in your attack on this company.

It's a Jewish company trying to do something for the Jewish community. That's what's important to me. By the way... distorting Torah is a great sin than whatever you think you're talking about.

And by the way, if you or "Der Rebbe" of your camp who said this is Traif would like some Halachic advice regarding selfishly distorting and mocking Divrei Chazal I'll be happy to teach you. Someone should...

Are there separate machines for men and women?

28

Jul 29, 2008 at 02:09 PM Anonymous Says:

12:45 and the rest of you who have no problem with Price Gouging.

Overcharging is against the Torah - "Ossur Min Hatorah" period.!!

Any way you phrase or try to twist it, it's not going to change the Torah Law. If you have an
issue with that, you are more then welcome to change religions.

Maybe they should offer free drinks & snacks
to any body hungry. What happened to Chesed
the ways of Avraham . At least dont overcharge you own Jewish brothers.

Yitzchok; now thats funny! Thanks for the chuckle. If not separate machines, they will post separate hours for men and women. And there will be tznius police to make sure the women meet their standards before they can buy food.

2:09, do you have the slightest idea what this machine costs to operate? purchasing the machine, rent for the Airport, transporting the food to those various locations on a steady basis, and the products themselves.

it's very simple to bash and discredit WITHOUT KNOWING ANY FACTS!

i can understand that kosher food cost more etc but when u go to the sloatsberg rest stop area and the exact same item (not pakosher brand)say tweezlers licorice in non kosher vending machine .85 in kosher vending machine $1.35 now that's what i call "RIP OFF"

here take a quarter, i can spare you one just keep quiet!!

this is the best idea yet, and i commend those who go through the loops to make money and dont sit and complain how others are making it... if you dont like the prices, maybe you should have thought of this idea first and you could have done Chesed with it... easy to be a "tzadik" on the account of others

glad to see this finalized. i know several people (diff. companies) who have tried this over the years, it is an incredibly expensive venture and very limiting by licensing etc, so it really is nice to see that it worked out for these guys. i only hope enough people will buy food so that these machines can stay in business. it's a service for those of us who keep kosher (so the $1 or $2 "surcharge" is not gonna kill anyone)
in fact, i hope the food is so good so that non-jews will buy too!!

It's amazing how 'sinas chinum' rears its ugly head when a great idea that benefits the Klal is born. These mental cripples will pick on anything from the prices of these delicious and welcome treats (quite reasonable and comprable to store-bought, but better tasting and ready in seconds!) in places that have not seen Kosher foods before, to the foolish humore and rediculous complaints about the quality of the products. No one is FORCING you to buy it if you take difference with it. But I'll bet pennies to peanuts all those complainers and Nay-sayers will be the first to dig into their pockets to gobble up these hot and delicious goodies while waiting for their 'free flights', 'shopping on Wal-Mart's treat' or making a pit-stop in Woodberry Commons 'just to brows'. Get a life and get real! Nothing is free and no one gets something for nothing! In the vast scheme of things, whoever thought this up is not charging outside the norm for such a venture and the quality of product. And it is deffinately a great convenience and Kiddush Hashem to provide Kosher food for those who might, Chas V'Sholom, be tempted to buy 'tarfes' because they are starving.

And of course hechsher tzedek will want to get into the picture and for a few bucks will add their hechsher with the assurances that the machine has not been abused or mistreated in any way. Way to go to Moe!

Everyone knows kosher food is insanely priced. Grape juice 4.99, Jarred fish 5.99 for 6 pieces! fishsticks 8.99 I can go on and on! Absolute violations of the torah and really a test of yidishkeit just to be able to afford and keep kosher especially in harsh economic times.
