The MTA has put out a request for proposals to transform its current toll plaza to an all-E-Z Pass and cashless payment system.

Non-E-Z Pass users would be charged with license plate cameras (the same idea floated in congestion pricing). The MTA wants to "get rid of all toll booths in the next four years."

The Port Authority is looking to do the same thing for its bridges and tunnels.

What happens when the circus comes to town? If the elephants have no license tags, then do they need E-Z Passes to go through the tunnel?

This is actually a good idea considering toll booths cause traffic when people start digging around in their wallets to find the cash to pay. This way everyone can just pass through faster.

This system (or similar) already works well in Australia, to my knowledge.
While driving at normal speeds, on a toll road, the license plate is recorded (using technology of course). The billing process could then be similar to EZ-Pass.

To Passaic Rav:
Getting away without plates, I don't the plan won't take that into consideration.

Yep they'll figure out when a person reporting minimum income (for whatever reason) is paying more than thier gross income in tolls, by the car(s) that's registered to them.

Easing Congestion?
I can see that being the case when the cause is the Toll booth slowdown, but when volume is the cause, this is not gonna help. (for example at the GWB into NYC, where the bridge rubbernecks all those approches into so few lanes. The toll booths rarely have anything to do with it.)

They have a great (although way overpriced) charging system in London with no "EZ Pass" system. There are no toll booths, & have a camera (or 2) on every lane records the license plate. If you dont pay once, they'll send you a bill; 3 times and they can come & confiscate the car!

As for security, I doubt any toll booths at the moment actually keep anything secure. They can still have police hanging around as they do at the moment.

What Happens If You Drive Rental

The proposed concept already works fine right in the Tri-State area. Drive on The GSP to NJ and the express lanes have EZ-Pass cameras zeroing in on your car while speeding 55 MPH, no slowing down to 25 or 5 MPH.
To MAGJTP, rental car companies already offer EZ-Pass for your rental car. No big deal for them to bill accordingly, license plate scan or otherwise.

Oy Gevald is correct. On the GSP it takes pictures of license plates as well as picking up the EZ-Pass signal. If an EZ-Pass doesn't match a license plate address you might get a letter asking you to match your license with a tag. Happened to my brother.
