The army says other soldiers intervened to stop the unidentified Palestinian from stabbing his intended victim in the town of Tulkarem on Monday.

The attack comes amid high tensions between Israelis and Palestinians, mostly over the longstanding impasse in the Middle East peace process and Palestinian fears that Israel is trying to change the status quo at a sensitive holy site in Jerusalem by allowing Jews to pray there.

Over the last two months, 11 Israelis have been killed in five separate Palestinian attacks – mostly in Jerusalem, but also in the West Bank and Tel Aviv. Five of the Palestinian assailants were killed by Israeli security forces.
