The New York Post reported Monday (http://bit.ly/13qJe2s ) that about 32,500 tickets have been issued to cyclists from Jan. 1 through Nov. 30. That’s about 25 percent fewer than during the same period last year.

The tickets can reflect offenses ranging from going the wrong way to going through red lights.

Two bike crashes killed pedestrians in Central Park this year and prompted the city to lower the cycling speed limit there from 25 to 20 mph.

The city also is looking at redesigns that could help make crosswalks safer for park-goers.

Smart move. Bikers are taking traffic off the streets in the heimeshe neighborhoods so the police should be focusing their ticketing efforts on those who double and triple park their cars and vans outside of the shuls and beis midrashim (especially during the morning and evening minyan hours), blocking the lanes outside the markets and simcha halls etc. Frum families should consider biking to most of their activities and benefit from the reductions in noise and pollution.

Bs’d. Many of those tickets, such as one that i got, are dismissed. Also, many messengers, etc. don’t carry ID.

How about going after the bicyclists who RIDE ON THE SIDEWALK?! I work around Astor Place and inconsiderate louts of all ages think nothing of riding on the sidewalk (and NOT just delivery boys)…then they yell at people for not jumping out of their way.

How about legislation that bicycle riders violating any of the relevant traffic laws are ineligible for any insurance benefits or government assistance for injuries to them or their equipment. Likewise, they are fully liable for all damages and injuries to any other parties.

    rule #1

any bike that is purchased/ used by anyone over 21 years of age must be licensed,so that it can identifiable and traced back to the owner, who can then be held responsible for any misuse or havoc this bike causes

At least they are still writing tickets. Here in Chicago I have never seen a bicyclist receive a ticket but I always see them violating basic traffic laws such as running red lights and stop signs.

geeze get real all of you and stop being a bunch of whiners ,,,,,,, you make it sound like u guys never violated any traffic laws like going over the speed limit, going through a red light, not stopping completely at a stop sign and the list goes on and on..My point is your wrath is so not proportional to reality. If u really feel this way about bikers then your logic would dictate to put every person who drives a car (which carries the potential of much greater damage physically and monetary) and violates basic traffic laws should be arrested, tried, and locked away etc.
