Jerusalem – Police Arrest Man Suspected To Work For ‘Vaad Hatznious’

Jerusalem – Highlighting what may be a growing trend in fanaticism, a 28-year-old resident of Jerusalem’s Ramot neighborhood has been arrested for attacking a woman as part of his activity in the “tznius patrol” or modesty police.

Elhanan Buzaglo appeared in Jerusalem District Court on Sunday to answer charges stemming from a June 2008 home invasion in which a young woman was reportedly beaten by a group of ultra-Orthodox young men.

The woman had apparently been seen in the company of married men from the community.

Details of the investigation, which began a month and a half ago, reveal that members of the tznius patrol entered the woman’s home and demanded that she move out, telling her that residents of the neighborhood had complained about her.

After the woman refused to do so, Buzaglo and two other men from the patrol allegedly attacked her. In addition, a third member of the patrol is suspected of stealing two cell phones from the woman’s apartment during the fray.

Buzaglo was arrested after his fingerprints were identified inside the woman’s apartment, while a number of separate complaints from other women have been made about him as well.

Ranging from verbal harassment to an incident in which Buzaglo allegedly attempted to run a girl over with a car, there are at least 10 possible charges facing him.

Buzaglo’s attorney, Ariel Atari, [this lawyer also represents Elior Chen] maintained his client’s innocence, saying Buzaglo isn’t even a member of the patrol.

“My client has no relation to the modesty police,” Atari told The Jerusalem Post on Monday. “Because he wears hassidic clothing, the police are trying to pin every instance of haredi violence on him. The fact that his fingerprints were taken from the scene of one of these alleged incidents is the only relation my client has to any of the cases. They have not yet proven anything concrete.”

Speaking about Buzaglo’s case, Jerusalem City Council opposition head Nir Barkat told the Post: “We have to uproot this despicable phenomenon of violence. I call upon the police to deal with this issue and guarantee the personal safety of the residents of Jerusalem.”

The use of violence by modesty patrols in ultra-orthodox areas, however, is not a new occurrence.

Also in June, a 14-year-old girl in Betar Illit had acid spilled on her face and body, causing light burns. That incident was attributed to a similar modesty patrol in the town.

In a graver incident that took place in November 2006, Miriam Shear, an orthodox woman from Canada, was allegedly beaten on the floor of an Egged bus when she refused to give up her seat as she rode to the Western Wall.

“I had heard a lot of rumors about [modesty police], but I didn’t really believe they existed,” said an orthodox Jerusalem resident who wished to remain anonymous. “Then a relative of mine told me that she was walking out of a store with a dress she had just purchased and a woman came up and sprayed it with white spray paint, ruining it. My relative is religious,” the man continued, “But I guess the clothes she had decided to buy were not modest enough for the other woman.”

But the dumb lawyer still can’t explain how his clients fingerprints were found in the home of one or two of the victims.

During the Islamic Revolution in Iran (1979) the EXACT SAME activities were carried out against women who were not *modest*.

…although it’s kedai to note that they were carried out by other women only, as a men are forbidden from touching women…

Hersh you are either misguided or an idiot. Either way there is a looney element in Israel and in some US neighborhoods that have taken it upon themselves to decide how to enforce “their version” of halcha

Yoselle sorry you are wrong – in Iran the MEN were the main driving force in Islamic Guard and MEN openly attacked women including rape and murder to enforce their version of “modesty”

These shnooks should be sentenced to the fullest extenet of the law – and people wonder about ‘children at risk” its amazing anyone encountering these idiots would be religious at all.

What everyone seems to have overlooked is that 2 cell phones were stolen from the womans apartment. Why is everyone ignoring this outrage? It wouldn’t surprise me if those phones were ‘internet enabled’ chas v’shalom. She was beaten because she refused to vacate her apartment. She probably provoked them with her seductive clothing…Let’s wait for all the facts to emerge before rendering judgement.

Although I condemn the beatings by any one I am shocked and dismayed at all the posts talking and defending the “Poor Women who was seen in the company of married men from the community” do you know that we are talking about Yehrog Vaal Yavor.

I don’t know if these allegations are true or not but if it is you are talking about shaalos of mamzeriem which beside messing up the kids and whole families for generation are wrecking marriages and families .

It is outrageous how all the above posts could talk about is did “he hit her or not” don’t people understand that when a frum woman or man acts immodestly in a frum neighborhood the are being machshil everyone with Rios Asiros don’t you say it every day in Krias Shema Vlo Soseery Achrey Inichem where is the outrage!!.

Sure I am against hitting but to get them out of the neighborhood absolutely if you love the way these outcast dress and behave go move to a secular neighborhood.

If we don’t fight these “Bums and lowlifes” we will Chas vesholem lose the most precious thing we have that is our Kids!!!

Get a job and don’t leech off of the government. Then you won’t have time to worry if the women meet your guidelines of tzniot. You’ll actually have money to pay for your own food and provide for yourself and family.

Or you can join Nachal Chareidi – learn Torah and learn how to defend yourself from the true enemies – Arabs. Plus you might learn some good skills to help you in later in life. There’s a reason the soldiers like to sing “Heenay Matovu U’manayim, Shevet Achim G’am Yachad.”

The reason it says yom tov is this is the only time that men and woman really had time off and the possibility to mingle. Today it applies to pizza shops, to co-ed day schools like Frisch, Hashem yerachem, certain office situations, uchidomeh. Yes shulchan aruch requires us to have tznius police to protect us against the type of people that think certain parts of shulchan aruch don’t apply any more.

“Yes shulchan aruch requires us to have tznius police to protect us against the type of people that think certain parts of shulchan aruch don’t apply any more.”

And under whose authority do these so-called “tznius police” vigilante morons operate? Who is their commander? Who sets the membership standards and decides whether someone is truly a religious man motivated by a since love of G-d or just an unstable nutball using his “position” to work out his own troubled psychotic traumas?

In a real police department, like say the NYPD, the officers wear badges with their numbers and nameplates and if one acts wrongly, you can write a letter of complaint to his or her boss, Raymond Kelly. Where are the badges and nameplates for these tsnius thugs so they can be held accountable? Who is their equivalent of Ray Kelly? Or are they like those Mexican bandito badguys in that old Humphrey Bogart film who famously sneered “Badges? We don’t need no stinkin’ badges!”?

Matzahlocal101 I did not read in your quote from the Shulchan Oruch that the “police” are supposed to attack beat up throw acid or even verbally harass the transgressors. Their job is to warn – יזהירו בדבר זה לכל העם etc. Please remember that the תורה הקדושה tells us how to behave and how to rebuke but at the same time it must be done in a manner that fits in with דרכיה דרכי נועם and not vigilante actions by hot headed self appointed G-d’s policemen.

However with all of this I feel that what is missing from this post and all of the comments is the young lady’s version of the story leading up to the attack. Is she married or single – this makes a difference to whether there would be a shaale of mamzeirus as mentioned by one of the earlier comments. Maybe she was giving directions! And more to the point, if she was seen in the “company” of married men then why has nothing been done to these men? The issur of Veloi sosuru is on the men and not the women. They have thir own chiyuvim but we cannot condone the men who were “cohorting” with her for their actions. Unless of course they were allowed to be talking to her and in which case she also has done nothing wrong.

I have just realised that the married men she was seen with were other members of the tzenius patrol who were trying to set her up in order to give some other members an excuse to beat someone up and have it serve as a warning for all the others?

This is not what the Torah Hakedoshah wnats from us in these days of mourning! We are supposed to increase ahaveas chinam and promote yiddishkeit and kiyum hamitvois in a manner truly befitting bnei Torah.

I can bet all of you, that the tznius patrol are not Chabad.

I got to know some Chabad people, and they sure know how to bring any Yidishe neshomoh back to Yidishkeit. I also heard of stories were Satmar or other Chasidim went astray, they became such low-lifes, but somehow with the ahavas yisroel with the Chabad approach, these men and women came back to Yidishkeit which I give Chabad credit.

    Thank you Chabad.

I remember seeing these bums with the disguise of chasidim ON SHABBOS carrying signs and throwing rocks at people who they disapproved of. THese fakers also gave themselves to put their hands on strange women, allowed themselves to steal and gave their holy selves permission to do whatever it takes.

Guess what? They are acting like the Islamics.

The Muslims give themselves permission also. They call themselves heros when they kill someone. The more people they kill, the bigger the hero they become. Their motto? Kill and hate.

Matzah101: ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND! Are you too looking for a heter to touch [or beat – not sure what your aim is] jewish women/girls?! First of all, that piece from the shulchan aruch you quoted above, is in siman תקכט , try harder next time not to mislead people. Second of all, who’d you learn shulchan aruch with, Ahmed Al-jasir? We don’t need your corrupted explanations of why it does or does not say יו”ט , we did fine with the mishneh berura (see there) till now. Now for your record, ומחפשים does not mean “and impose [physically]”. And the biggest point you LEFT OUT; it says “…חייב ב”ד להעמיד”, THEY are completely unqualified and are simply not a frum and torah abiding ב”ד. Or maybe now we can all just be our own personal with a couple of friends and go aroud patrolling? By all means, pervert the koran, not our life/torah. Take care, and keep out of trouble.

Anonymous 8:40pm: Did you learn in the same yehiva with Ahmed? Where does the torah tell us that a woman walking in the street or between to men (or whatever the story was) is a case of יהרוג ואל יעבור ? If it was so, don’t you think chazal would’ve told us so, when the said that the problem is, is that it’s bad for the memory (masechet horyos 13a)? Thank god your both wrong, our streets would have looked like Rowanda!

(Here’s just a pearl of wisdom from R’ Moshe Feinstein zt”l (not in his sefer Darash Moshe on the torah, it was said orally); by the story of Pinchas, the passuk says (bamidbar 25,8) ויקח רומח בידו (and he took a spear in his hand) meaning, Pinchas wasn’t roaming the streets looking for a chance to practice his יהרוג ואל יעבור techniques on someone, rather only after he saw what happened and he was certain of the halacha, only then did he fetch a spear! Hatzlacha!

Again I dont condone the actions of the so called Vaad but I believe the real outrage should be direct at people that act and intice outher people to be Oiver the worst Avaire possible. Those peolpe “Should rot in Jail”.I am suprised being that this is a so called frum Blog that most posts have no broblem with people playing around with of the three worst avairos in Judasem right in their neighborhood and in front of their kids. The story says she “was seen in the company of married men from the community”, but what exactly does this mean? Is this meant as a euphemism? Who saw her? Where was she seen? What was the context? If such a Vaad moved into my town, they might see my neighbor dropping off his young daughters at my front door to play with my little girl. Would this count as being “seen in the company of married men from the community”?

Also, I’m curious about what response the Vaad made to the aforementioned “married men”? Were they also asked to leave town? Were they threatened with beatings?

Also, no spouse or partner of the beating victim is mentioned, so it’s quite possible that there is none. If she’d had a husband living with her, perhaps the people who beat her would’ve been afraid to do so. (Rather like the way those anti-fur nuts attack old ladies in fur coats & not bikers in leather jackets).

Disguted, Why bother to write to these sickos, that are frum for others and in their own private life are oiver the worst…

I believe it’s their inner guilt writing like Matzahloko101. there is always nebbech a few, unstables, and low self esteems, guilt driven, ready to oppose majority opinion for the sake of controversy it gives them a high, to get all this response, it makes them feel important…

With regard to the Vigilanties hiding behind Niture Karte garb (Iran kissing Holy Molies) using the torah as a poor excuse for their actions. I think the law is too good for them. There should form an opposing vigilante group to treat them with the same punishment “ayin tachas ayin” literally, then we might see “mah Desunei loch l’chavreich lo savid” if they seem find a heter in the torah for their actions, then let’s use that same torah for our reactions…
