Cuomo included the proposal in his combined budget and state of the state address in Albany Wednesday, shortly after the state Senate passed an education investment tax credit bill.
Taxpayers would be able to claim a credit for donations to public schools, school improvement organizations or scholarship programs for students attending religious or other eligible private schools.
The Catholic church and many Jewish Organizations has been pushing for the legislation, while the state’s teachers unions have opposed it, saying it diverts money from public schools.
About time.
We need to work together to make this happen. It would be huge for our schools.
We also need a mechanism to keep our Mosdos out of trouble. It would be appropriate for the Agudah to step in and monitor things for our community and establish some kind of meaningful “hashgacha” to make sure Mosdos behave properly when confronted with this windfall. Good luck.
Great news, EXCEPT for the important fact that this will apply to schools of any religion…..Jewish, Xtian, Muslim, etc.. Do we really want this?? It will make it easier for ALL religious people to attend private school.
