Georgia - Rabbi Shteinman Gives 'Brocha' To War-Stricken Country |
|
It all started last winter when a delegation of rabbis from the Vaad L'Hatzolas Nidchei Yisroel met with the premier in his office in Tbilisi, where they bestowed upon him a special letter from Rabbi Shteinman, who is considered one of the greatest rabbis currently leading the ultra-Orthodox public. In the letter, Shteinman blesses Georgia, which he dubs "a kingdom of grace", and its people. Gurgenidze hung the letter respectfully on his wall.
On Tuesday, during Morning Prayer, the Vaad's chairman Rabbi Shimon Brook received a phone call from none other than the Georgian prime minister. "You brought a letter from an old rabbi. Is he still alive?" the premier asked. When he received a positive answer he made his request. "I hear he is a holy man, and I ask that he pray for our country."
The Vaad has been active in the countries of the former Soviet Union for over 30 years, and in Tbilisi its programs include schools, a yeshiva, and temples. The activities are led by organization representatives that grew up in Georgia, left in order to receive an American education, and returned in order to educate the Jewish community in the country.
In light of the recent battles plaguing the countries, the Georgian Jewish leaders have been in constant contact with the Vaad in order to receive orders on how to act in this dangerous situation
Thus, following the premier's request for a blessing and the Jewish leaders' requests for orders, Rabbi Brook went to visit Rabbi Shteinman in Bnei Brak on Tuesday. The latter, despite being ill, agreed to see the guest and even granted Gurgenidze's appeal, blessing the war-torn state. He also answered questions directed at him by the Jewish leaders in Georgia.
Brook also asked Shteinman if the Vaad should send a delegation to help strengthen the Jewish community in Georgia, but to this the great rabbi answered, "Don't go there – there is fire there."
Other rabbis were convinced Shteinman had an auspicious effect on the battles in the region. "You can't ignore the fact that during the precise moments in which the meeting took place at Rabbi Shteinman's house, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced a ceasefire," the Vaad's public relations representative, Betzalel Kahan, told Ynet.

FYI dear bloggers:
Republic of Georgia was always tolerant towards other religions. Specially during the USSR days, Georgian Jewish community was not persecuted, as in other republics. Georgian Jews have been living there since the Churban Bais Sheni. And have their own minhagim. Also, during the Holocaust, thousands of Russian/Ukrainian Jews found refuge in Georgia.
I think this is why they were zoche for a bracha. Suprisingly, they asked for it!
If goyim are recognizing Yedin as a source for a bracha, Mashiach is coming!

Anon 5:58 - that is indeed a valid weighty question. And another valid weighty question is what would Georgian officials say in relation to the Jews in Georgia if Rav Shteinman had refused the request of the prime minister to give a brocho.
Boruch Hashem we have people like Rav Shteinman, zol gezunt zein, who have the siyata dishmaya to make such decisions.

If we tie up our troops in Iraq, Afganistan, and Russia (lets not forget N. Korea, either) We won't have the firepower left to disable the nuclear sites in Iran. I guess as usual it will be left to little Israel to take care of business (to the private, and quiet relief of middle east and Europe) and Noisy public display of Condemnation........some things never change.

My response: The chofetz chaim, chazon ish etc... are relatively speaking the more recent generations, and hey maybe they (the populace) caught on to the chasiddishe minhugim because they saw it was popular and didn't have anything to match that...(dont get me wrong, the chofetz chaim was definitely of the saintliest men in his time, but R' Shteinman? I am no person to judge to put him on the same level he may be a great gaon, but to say someone is a tzadik...we must first understand the significance of the meaning of tzaddik before we throw that term around to every [ofcourse only litvishe] rosh yeshiva on the planet).
Also, this whole thing of sending kvitlach etc.. is a Chassidishe concept started by rebbes, a concept historicaly always mocked my misnagdim, now all of a sudden I find in my mail box 'kupat ha'ir's literature where they advertise 'gedolim' like they are models, and offer to send KVITLACH to R' shteinman R' chaim kanievsky, and I don't recall the others.. but all of a sudden the kvitlach are a universal concept no more a joke by the litvishe world... just makes me laugh how the same people always catch onto things a little late in the game!

I am a Chasid and everyone knows that R' steinman and R' chaim kanievsky, are the greatest gaonim and tzaddikim today. It includes torah avodah yiras shomayim and perishous. You obviously know nothing about them. Chazal say that someone that speaks bad about a talmid chochom, has no cure to his illness, and has no part in olam haba.

You seem to be a Lubvicher and sadly, reflect a certain attitude within Chabad: If you aren't Chabad, your chassidus isn't real. In other words, that only Chabad practices "real" Judaism and a rebbe tzaddik that isn't chabad isn't a tzaddik. it's about time that you work on real ahavas yisroel to love all jews.

Wow, you are so engulfed, encompassed, overwhelmed and consumed in your 'kulei almoh lo pligi' (that there are no greater than them), that you already put a libel on me that I, that's me, I am making fun of talnidei chchomim Choliloh, your being choshed b'ksherim. Where do you see that I made fun of any if the above mentioned rabbis?
Did I comedicaly mock certain groups of people? yes, the rabbis? no. don't twist my words.
Don't get so serious on me, were not in middle of a shiur over here.
What I want to know is just, where is your measuring stick, that you measure the above mentioned, to be the greatest tzadikim now?
Maybe the Tosher rebbe is the greatest tzaddik? how about the Amshinuver rebbe? maybe Harav Mordechai Eliyahu? Why are you so narrow minded? My point is, what do YOU know? who are you to measure such concepts?
Such Yeridas hadoros these days!
A hundred years ago, two hundred yr's ago... people were smart enough to sense who the real gedolei hador were. Now? what do we know, the real gedolim are hidden and quiet people, part of chevlei moshiach, no authentic leaders...(for more info. please search: BIG EVENT in your memory, it wasn't that long ago) at least that's my opnion, you are entitled to your opinion without disregarding anyone who disagrees with you as an apikores. Eizehu chochom, halomed miKOL odom, that includes KOL odom, and inteligent people answer to the point and stick to the issue, they don't sidetrack, also from pirkei uvos..

The real gedolei hador were always measured by how much torah they knew and learned. Chazal say that if a person has a sick person in his house he should to to a talmud chacham for a blessing.
R' steinman and R' chaim kanievsky are from the greatist talmidai chacomim today plus good midos humility... They are recognized by all other gedolid as the greatist leaders of klal yisroel. your " but R' Shteinman?" is a bizoyon talmud chochom.
