San Francisco, CA - At a Dell press event in San Francisco this morning, its Senior Vice President for the business products group, Jeffrey Clarke, filled in the biggest missing element in Dell's description of its completely redesigned Latitude product line to this point: Dell, he says, has developed a proprietary power cell technology that will enable Latitudes to run continuously while unplugged for at least 10 hours, and intermittently for as much as 19 hours straight.

The new battery technology will be implemented in all seven of Dell's new models, though it's likely that power consumption metrics will fluctuate between its standard mainstream model, its new widescreen model, and its new Latitude UMPC which may sip power more slowly.

Clarke told attendees at today's press event that, in recent discussions with Dell customers, their desires boiled down to four elements, number one being the need for longer battery life. Second on the list was a need for data security, especially in case of loss or theft; third is improved design (represented by a number of improvements including magnesium allow construction, keyboard backlighting, and optional Samsung solid-state disks across all models), and easier remote management by IT administrators.

The size of the external AC adapter has been reduced by half, Clarke added, and should be able to restore as much as 80% of battery power after one hour of being plugged in. And another enhancement is a built-in free-fall detector capable of parking the hard disk drives for falls as short as six inches.

I buy Dell all the time because that family is not only Jewish but the Dells give to many Jewish causes. For example The Dell Jewish Community Campus is a 40-acre facility in Northwest Austin. It opened in 2000, due in large part to land donated by Michael and Susan Dell. They also give another 2 million to that Jewish campus for Jewish causes and they donate an additional 2 million dollars to it ever year.
Therefore, I'm proud of them and I'm glad they made a better battery than anyone one selling laptops.

Many techies now avoid Dell because of negative customer service experiences. I ordered a lenovo and there was an unexpected delay which would have had a great impact because I needed it at a vacation location. lenovo went the extra mile and overnighted it from Shanghai straight to my door. Dell tells you to wait on the phone an hour for some Indian to authorize a return etc..

1 - Dell gave their laptops a redesign for this new Latitude E-Series. Michael Dell took control once again of his company and listened to his customers, making changes they all requested. The results are better built, attractive laptops, with the features we have come to expect from others, like Lenovo (the current gold standard of business laptops - even if they are not quite the same since the takeover).
2 - I've heard their Customer Service has gotten better as well, though I haven't used them, myself recently.
3 - Keep in mind that you will only get 19 hours by using an extra battery "slab." This slab goes under the laptop and is pretty much a base that is the same width and depth of the laptop itself. It should work very well but it definitely adds weight.

please keep in mind, if you take advantage of DELL's offer of 12 months interest free buying. once the year is up and you still owe them even one dollar they will bill you for a year of interest. sometimes it could be a nice few hundred bucks.
stay away from dell my friends.

I have purchased over 12 Dell computers so far, and currently own 7, both laptops and desktops. I have as yet to have any problems with any of them.

I have also never had to call customer service. Even my oldest ones always operated just as good as brand new at the time I gave them away. The one I am on now is 5 years old and is as good as new.

How could I ask for more?

Keep in mind 10/19 hours is without doing anything. Playing a dvd of Barney is going to cost you 7 hours of battery.
