Majority Leader Joseph Morelle says Friday he’s confident Assemblyman Carl Heastie (HAY’-stee) can unite legislators and move the institution forward.
He follows Assemblyman Keith Wright of Manhattan and Joseph Lentol of the Bronx in dropping out and backing Heastie, a legislator for 14 years and former New York City financial analyst.
Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan of Queens remains the only other candidate to replace Speaker Sheldon Silver, who is scheduled to vacate the office Monday.
The Assembly’s majority Democrats decided Silver needs to step aside following federal charges that he took nearly $4 million in kickbacks over a decade.
Silver denies the charges.
