New York City - NY Times Endorses Newcomer Over Sheldon Silver |
|
The most important of these races is in Lower Manhattan, where Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, one of the most powerful people in the state, is facing his first real challenge in decades. It is still an uphill fight for any opponent, but the race has already made one difference. It has brought the ever-secretive Mr. Silver out to meet voters and campaign for his job.
Of the two challengers, Paul Newell, a community activist with deep roots in the Lower East Side, has the stronger credentials. Luke Henry, an attorney who moved into the district more recently, is working hard. Mr. Newell has done a better job of identifying Mr. Silver’s weaknesses: mainly, his devotion to closed-door politics, including his refusal to disclose details about his outside income. Mr. Newell is also pledging to support congestion pricing and to press for a nonpartisan redistricting commission, which is essential for real change. In the 64th Assembly District, we endorse Paul Newell.

If Silver lost, who would become Speaker? Is it an elected position or by seniority?

The Speaker is the elected leader of the Democrats in the Assembly. They can elect a new leader any time they like.

For the purposes of VIN readership, Silver is the guy who passed legislation ensuring people's right to kosher food, religious accomodation, no autopsy if possible, get law, etc. He also makes sure that government will take care of your parents and grandparents when they are old and frail or your children if they, chas v'sholom, need special services.
Too many frum people take him for granted and some even are angry at him because they think he is responsible for higher taxes, which is far from the truth. New York State has higher taxes because we have the best mass transit, highway and educational systems in the United States which costs more but it pre-dates Silver as Assembly leader.
As for possible successors, none will watch out for the frum community like he does. None will be able to bring the State resources into the City like he does and none certainly will have the guts to stand up to people like Mayor Bloomberg when he thinks he is wrong as Silver has done.

Nachas, if all you have said is true, it is easy to see why the NY Times would back his opponent. I hope the newspaper goes out of business. They are on the wrong side of every issue!

As much as I cant stand the Slimes, shelly silver is quite tarnished himself. Open up a Chumash V'yakira to the kriyas ha'torah of yom kippur mincha and where ever it says "LO" mit an aleph, he learns up p'shat as "LO" mit a vov!

Murray,
The "gray old lady" going out of business is too easy of a punishment for their selective hateful rhetoric over the years. Rather they should struggle mightily to stay afloat incurring massive debts and steadily declining readership for long years to come.

The NY Times and most of the print media are well on the way of going out of business. Their readership has been steadily falling due to stiff competition from the new electronic media such as the internet and website like VIN where people can get their dose of news any time of the day and night. In the case of the NY Times I can wholeheartedly say... Good Riddance!!

Although I am not a big fan of the NY Times, it is a fact that Silver is a supporter of gays and abortion. That is hypocritical to being an open Orthodox Jew and is a chilul Hashem. I dont care what it does for one's political career.
He is a liberal, stuck up, stubborn and secretive. It is his fault the Assembly stinks.

Are you for real? NYS has really high taxes because we are one of the most generous with social services, which we all pay for. NYS never put away anything for a rainy day. The City counted on a lot of taxes from Wall Street and the state makes a fortune off of real estate taxes/closing costs - NY is the highest in the nation.
The problem with Shelly "Weitz & Luxenberg" Silver is he refuses to disclosue his arrangement with this personal injury firm. Never mind that he is the Assembly Speaker, just being a state politician is a conflict of interest because he could be voting on tort laws.
He also tows the liberal line, which is funny because that goes against the grain of frum values.
As far as the NY Slimes goes, these guys are recheaching for whatever straws they can to cling to their miserable paper. But I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they are worried that people are going to be voting with their feet if Albany doesn't clean up.

The reason why most people think that NYS has the highest taxes is because that statistic is phrased as an average. Since we have a lot of very rich people who live in very expensive homes, then the AVERAGE tax burden is large. When the tax burden is recalculated as per $10,000 of income/property, then NY actually comes out about average. Our taxes would also be even lower if the federal government returned even a fair amount of NYS tax dollars back to the state.
