The Daily News (http://nydn.us/1M3CCIX ) says engineers discovered over 3,000 new structural problems on the span. They include cracks in steel beams and fraying cables. That newly-found damage will increase the repair costs to more than $600 million.

The paper cited documents obtained via a Freedom of Information request.

The 132-year-old bridge had been set to reopen last April but was delayed for a year. The city Department of Transportation now says the work won’t be completed until sometime in 2016. The project was started in 2010.

Records show that many repairs have been completed. They include widening and refurbishing the span’s crumbling approaches and ramps.

We must have a toll! It’s only fair that drivers who use it need to pay for this. Not all of us! And the more they use it, the bigger share they should be paying for. Why would anyone argue??

Its restoration construction work. They will always discover new deficiencies as the work progresses and will always take longer than expected. Even with a new build construction there are unforseen circumstances – kal vechomer on projects like this.
