Denver, CO - Among New Jersey's delegates here for the Democratic National Convention is one whose story moved from the shadows of Nazi death camps to the rare echelons of American power and prestige and who is now back in Germany helping the world understand why he fled.

"We need to look to the future and how we relate to young people in a world without borders," said W. Michael Blumenthal, 82, who lives in Princeton and Berlin. He served in the Democratic administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson in the 1960s and then Jimmy Carter in the 1980s.

Werner Michael Blumenthal was born near Berlin in 1926 and at 13 saw his family sell all its possessions to buy his father's freedom from a concentration camp, then flee to Shanghai.

Seven years later, as a brighter dawn followed World War II, the family arrived in the United States, where Blumenthal took degrees from Berkeley and Princeton, then moved on to be Kennedy's deputy assistant secretary of state for economic affairs and Johnson's deputy special representative for trade negotiations.

Moving slalom in and out of the corporate, government and university habitats, Blumenthal became Carter's treasury secretary, where he served from 1977 to 1979.

Blumenthal fairly presaged positions taken today by Obama, the presidential candidate to whom he's pledged as a delegate. Business cottoned to him because he championed capitalism. Labor liked him because he pushed progressive employment and social policies.

"More recently," said Blumenthal, who is attending his third national convention, "I have been the director of the Jewish Museum of Berlin."

Asked to pit that endeavor against Jews who vow to never set foot in Germany for the Holocaust genocide Nazis pursued against them or their ancestors, Blumenthal said: "Things have substantially changed. That was a not-uncommon attitude among Jews all over the world. I might have felt the same way 10 to 15 years ago."

"It means a lot," the former university educator, diplomat and chief executive said of the museum. "The German government is making a very special effort to make sure the past is not swept under the rug, and the lessons learned from it are learned by Germans. It is a highly visited museum."

He said he is not a latecomer to the Obama camp.

"I have been a supporter of Obama since the beginning," said Blumenthal.

Blumenthal, at 82, is not the oldest Jersey delegate here. That bouquet goes to New Jersey's senior U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg, who is 84. Former Gov. Brendan Byrne, 84, and Essex County Democratic chairman Philip Thigpen, 82, are also older.

It hurts me to have to say something critical of a survivor but.......He was a Carter appointee, Carter , then as now has deep underlying hostility toward Jews, and especially Israel, and support of the Dems, and Obama helps strnghthen the one who would perpetrate the next Holocaust (G-D Forbid) the leader of Iran.

The writer certainly has an interesting way with words. Especially, his use of the word cotton as a verb and the word slalom, usually associated with skiing,in a unique context.

This man is a dyed in the wool Globalist, as is his mentors : Obama, and Carter. It is this idiotic talk (taken from this article) of "a world without borders" that leads directly to "open (US/Mexico) borders, and wholesale illegal immigration. What per centage of the FBI's most WANTED list are (on top of whatever additional crimes) illegal aliens. Last time I checked, I think it was 90%.

If memory serves me correctly, this man was never identified as a Jew when he was Secretary of the Treasury. His family embraced "Schmad" in the hopes of hopes of escaping the Nazi wrath - to no avail. I cannot recall him ever publicly making a re-connection with Judaism, unless being a director of a "Jewish" museum suffices as Teshuva.

Any jew who supports Obama has his head in the sand - his advisors are rabid anti-semites, supporters of Arab terrorists and even anti-american.

This gentleman is misguided - he served under Carter (a jew hater just read his book) and believes Germany which assists Iran has reformed.

I always wondered about jews that supported Hitlers rise - its no surprise we can see some of that crazyness again.

this man is not a survivor. A survivor is who survived a concentration camp, ghetto or labor camp. He arrived in the U.S. without a scratch, continued on American soil his education and never smelled the crematoria or was beaten by an SS man or witnessed the terror stricken children at a selection. He never suffered hunger or saw Jews begging for food, none was given and they dropped dead. Treblinka, Birkenau and Majdanek are names from history books if at all.

First off: the dimwit who wrote this article writes that this self-hating "Jew" worked in the Carter White House in the 1980s. In fact, in 1980 the country took, thank God, a 180 degree turn from the abhorrent Carter's policy and attitude, and was lead to uncompromised victory by Ronald Reagan. With all the circumstantial shortcomings of the Reagan White House (even the most Right Wing, Conservative historian can acknowledge and accept that it was not a perfect presidency, unlike the way the Liberals white wash the failed presidencies of Clinton, Carter, Johnson, Kennedy, Truman and FDR, without losing sight of the ideals, based on the noble Senator Barry Goldwater's principles, and going forward under a banner of Libertarian Conservatism) nobody can compare to the utter destruction that Carter wrought in the 1970s.

This “survivor,” auch mir ein Überlebender, proves like Madeline Albright that this country is open enough for prospective enemies to come, infiltrate our government and socialize us the sovereign citizens. This writer claims that Blumenthal was a Capitalist who was into “progressive employment and social policies;” my foot! If he supports a despot like Obama then he was never a capitalist, but rather, he earned money upon the backs of hard working saps that were under-paid and treated as sheep! I say this and I know this because this is how these Leftists describe Capitalism.

This guy is as close to being a complete goy as Obama; his lineage is Jewish, that is all. He is as Jewish as Saul Alinsky, Steven Spielberg, Moshe Tendler, Arnold Rothstein, Julius Rosenberg and other infamous subhuman characters whose ancestors happened to have been Jewish.

I’m thoroughly unimpressed with this old fart…

Well Said -Dave!, and don't forget that race aside, he could be Mayor Dinkins brother. I would be proud to use the 'facilities" that had these two as WRA's

Amazing! This man survived the Nazis and still didn't learn anything. Maybe he wants us to relive those events in our own time?

Aug 27, 2008 at 09:32 AM murray Says:

Of course he does want to relive those times, he is "nostalgic" (or senile) If Carter had stuck with "Habitat for Humanity" after his failed presidency he wouldn't have to face being held up to ridicule.

The problem is who is a survivor and who is not . I survived 4 years of concentration camp, total of 7 years under hitler
. Came to this country ,struggled and raised shomrei shabbes children and have erhrliche grandchildren. Other never saw a concentration camp, remained superficially Jewish and are also survivors
