Canada - Hasidic Jew from France Assaulted While Walking His Father to Shul |
|
Canada - A Hasidic Jew a French tourist was hit in the face while walking to a synagogue in Ste. Agathe, the incident is one of a number of attacks this summer on observant Jews in the Laurentians.
The attack took place as the 23-year-old was walking to synagogue with his father and two younger brothers, a group of teenagers began hurling insults at them. When the man asked the teens why they were abusing them, one of the youths stepped up and punched him, cutting his face with a ring.
"When he came to the synagogue, he was bleeding and very upset," said Rabbi Emanuel Carlebach of the House of Israel Congregation in Ste. Agathe.
A doctor who was present examined the victim and decided he didn't need to be hospitalized.
The victim's family lives in France but visits the Laurentians every summer for its vacations because the father is originally from Montreal.
Rabbi Carlebach said the father asked a few people who witnessed the incident to call the police, but none came to his aid.
"It was very strange," he said. "That bothered the family a lot."
The youths involved in the attack ran away and police have not located them.
Carlebach said he has been bothered by other acts of anti-Semitism this summer. He said groups of youths have shouted "heil, Hitler" while riding past the synagogue on their bicycles.
Ressa Nadler, an administrator at the synagogue, said there have been many attacks on Jews who live in Ste. Agathe. "It is just terrible," she said. "I have never seen it so bad. It is frightening."
Last summer, in nearby Val David, a series of suspicious fires hit the town, particularly in the neighbourhood of Préfontaine, where about 50 Hasidic Jewish families have cottages.
Ste. Agathe's mayor is on vacation, but the deputy town manager said he doesn't believe there is a problem with anti-Semitism in his community. "We get along well," Benoît Fugère said.
He said town officials plan to meet with members of the Jewish community when the mayor returns next month. "We want to hear their concerns."

"the Deputy town Mayor" said everything is Great here, there is no trouble with anti-semitism. Is he on crack? This wasn't an isolated incident, but part of a growing trend for the area. He shouldn't even have the position of Dog Catcher, or should I say Deputy Dawg catcher. I just wish the victim had just put up with the insults being "hurled at him" instead of saying anything that provoked them further. Obviously they were only to happy for this to escalate into physical harm. He could have just reported the incident. Nothing would be done about it, but then nothing is probably going to be done about this either.

A very inspiring tale, AND IRRESPONSIBLE-Mr. Hoffinger! First of all I am glad your daughter made it through the incident, and that her fighting back paid off. Her resistance could have maimed her, or took her life, G-D Forbid, as can happen to another lady who decides to fight. Karate and kicking don't usually work to well against a gun ( yes there are exceptions, by a few of the worlds top experts) At least why not provide her with pepper-spray, or if you live where it is legal to carry concealled weapons, a gun, and some target practice. Bottom line, its only money, and its better to give it up without resistance, if thats all they are after. I think the police would advise similarly.

The yid "asked the teens why they were abusing them"? That's so foolish. You can't have a conversation with shkotzim who obviously want to harm you . Red zu zey bilshonom, with a fist. In parshas mishpotim, we read about an egroff ( a fist), so evidently am yisroel also kenn shlugen. Why let the goy hit you first? Why let him control the situation? "Im bo l'horgoch, hashkeym l'horgoh." If he curses you, attack him immediately; don't give him musser. Zollen die goyim loyfen zum deputy mayor und veinen zu ihm.

Speaking as one who "Has Been There", [in the literal sense], I can state, that for the most part the "Upstate" French-Canadian population is very "Sympathetic" to the [religious/Hasidic] Jewish Community! But, unfortunately, there are neo-nazi influences in THAT Province, that the [Provincial] Government does not feel is dangerous enough to assign a high-priority status, to stamp it out!!!
