New York, NY - The city is setting up expanded bike parking for municipal workers.

City officials said today they would expand secure bicycle parking for employees at five municipal buildings in Lower Manhattan. Three existing bike parking facilities will be enlarged, going to 110 spaces from 46, and two others will be added, creating 24 new parking spaces.

“Bike commuting in New York has grown more than 75 percent since 2000, but one of the most frequent complaints we hear is that there’s nowhere to put your bike once you get to work,” said the city’s transportation commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan.

“As our bike network expands and more New Yorkers make their commutes in this sustainable way, we need to do more to provide City employees a safe, secure place to lock their bikes.”

Martha K. Hirst, the commissioner of citywide administrative services, said, “We will be enhancing the indoor bike rooms we opened last year, and, just as before, the new spaces will be open to any city employee working anywhere in Lower Manhattan.”

#1, 2: No
#3: Funny, I thought the same thing about cars, only cars weigh 1.5-3 tons, have poor visibility, pollute the air and make things pretty much miserable for everybody. So, take your pick bud.

#6 Actually, studies done by the city's health and transportation depts show that most bicycle crashes are due to car drivers, not bicyclists.

If the City wants its employees to use bikes, then why does it tolerate its employees (the NYPD) assaulting and pushing over bicyclists?

I wish we heimishe people break our negative outlook to bikes. It's cheap and it's healthy.

However, it's important that bike rideers follow official formal regulation. They should not be able to pass a red light. They should have flashers alerting cars of their presence (as they don't have the noise factor which cars do have), they should have rules regulating right of way for other bikers, cars, and pedestrians.

This could be done right! If there's a concerted effort by the city and it's citizens, it could be done properly.

to all of the above;
when a bicyclists is in the regular car lanes, they force the cars to swerve or brake for them. most bicyclists don't stop for red lights, and i can't count how many times i had to brake hard for a bicyclist who chose to get into my lane instead of going in the bike lane... the city would accomplish more if they would make the bike routes on quiet streets, and keep them out of the main streets... Broadway is not a place for a bicycle...

Cars think they own the road, they block bike lanes and drive irresponsibly (often while talking on cellular phone), along with all the pollution and noise they cause.

I can't tell you how many times I have almost, if not actually been hit by people getting out of a car who swing open their door on the street side without looking if a bicycle is nearby.

There are some cyclists that go overboard and they should be curbed, but car owners by far are more dangerous.

That's was funny 'Car drivers think they own the road'.

Yes they DO - without cars they never would have been paved and car bus suv truck owners pay taxes that go to maintain the roads _ without autos we wouldn't have large bridges or tunnels and their respective tolls.

So cars own the roads - and pay for those bike lanes ON THE ROAD.

The cop didn't knock over that bike rider for being a saint.

Don,

Did you fail history class? Because if you passed you'd know that it was bicyclists that got the first paved roads in the U.S.

Did you fail economics class too? Because if you passed, you'd know that gas taxes don't even begin to cover the cost of maintaining roads, to say nothing of the massive externalities suffered by everybody because of an over-dependence on motor vehicles.

Did you fail your driver's test too? Because if you'd pass, you'd know that bicyclists have the same right to the roads as do motor vehicles.

As for the cop smashing the bicyclist to the ground -- if you had been paying attention to the news for the past several years, you'd know that the NYPD has been harassing law-abiding cyclists for years now -- committing unprovoked assault, ticketing and arresting cyclists for laws that don't exist and committing out-right perjury.

So, please hit the books before you post again.
