Williamsburg, NY - Satmar Teacher Sued For Millions By Former Student For Sexual Abuse |
|
Williamsburg, NY - A teacher at a prominent Satmar yeshiva in Williamsburg is being sued by a former student for sexual assault and abuse.
In court papers filed Wednesday, Joel Engelman is seeking $5 million in damages from Rabbi Avorohom Reichman, the yeshiva, the United Talmudical Academy and the Satmar Bungalow Colony, where Reichman also teaches in the sects summer camp in upstate White Lake.
The civil complaint alleges that Engelman, now 23, was 8 years old in 1993 when Rabbi Reichman sexually assaulted him. The suit alleges that Engelman suffered psychological and physical injury, which required medical and psychological treatment, as a result of the abuse.
The suit also alleges that the school continues to lack basic rules protecting children from sexual assault.
It states that a deal was in place in April whereby the Engelman family agreed not to pursue legal action in return for Reichmans resignation from the school and the camp. But Rabbi Reichman, according to the suit, was videotaped teaching at the camp in July, after the statute of limitations
for a criminal prosecution had run out.

The defendants fraudulently induced Joel Engelman to enter into this exchange of mutual promises, and oral contract, the suit alleges.
It also claims that various Satmar officials investigated Engelmans allegations and found that ³there were multiple, credible complaints of sexual abuse made against Reichman.
Calls to United Talmudical Academy and the Satmar Bungalow Colony for comment were not returned.
I really didnt want this to get into the courts, Engelman told The Jewish Week. Had they done things differently [and fired Reichman], I probably wouldn't have sued. This is the last thing I wanted.
Engelman¹s sexual abuse allegations are the latest in a string of such charges made by former male yeshiva students in ultra-Orthodox schools in Brooklyn.
Rabbi Yehuda Kolko, a first grade teacher at Yeshiva Torah Temima in Flatbush, recently plead guilty to two counts of endangering the welfare of a child after being charged with several counts of sexual abuse. Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes defended the last-minute plea, citing the
young age of the plaintiff.
Several civil suits pending against Rabbi Kolko and the school seek a total some $50 million in damages.

Imagine - they agree not to sue the predator who molested their son if he just resigns from the school to avoid destroying other young lives. no reporting to the authorities, no hush money, no public statement. ALL THEY WANTED TO DO WAS PREVENT THIS PREDATOR FROM PREYING ON OTHER PRECIOUS NESHOMAS and they could'nt even do that. I hope they throw the book at this aberration of humanity

The family should sue the whole system for fraud in the inducement. the whole agreement should be null and viod for numerous legal reasons. You cannot have a legally enforceable contract to conceal a crime. Why only 5 million dollars??????? The only way whoever is in charge of this yeshiva will learn their lesson is by being hit in the pocketbook. Obviously they felt no ethical, moral, or halachic obligation to keep predators away from children.

sence - it is well established that victims do not come forward for various reasons not the least of which is humiliation. A sex victim especially in insular communities such as satmar, would be better served to keep it private for the sake of the family name and future shidduchim - that is just a fact like it or not. It is also embarrassing and the victim feels guilty and complacent is the abuse, as if an 8 year old can consent. The article dosent mention if he is married but at 23 if he is still single maybe the trauma of the abuse is now becomming a factor is his being able to go on with his life and marry and have his own family. It is extremely sad for the visctim and their families. And if these survicors do marry and have children the emotional effects of their trauma are a cause for emotional instability in the family. This is not a joke - lives are shattered and ruined.

Dear Boro Park Jew - I dont knw any of the players here but I can tell you this - if the victim was as you say a "bad student" who faced tough times with the alleged perpertrator, then he fits the mold of an abused student perfectly. The abuse is emotional and the rebbe who is a poosition of power over the victim uses that power to control the victim, So not only does the victim feel strong enough to report the abuse, to the cvontrary, a minipulative adult uses anything in his (or her) power to prevent such esposure. They can convince the victim that they are acting out of love or concern or whatever they feel will work on this particular victim. Moreover, if he was a "bad student" by the age of 8 there is a reason. And if the reason preexisted the relationship with the rebbe then the rebbe would have seem him as the perfect victim. It is almost the perfect crimwe.

This is an outrageous crime! I happen to know both parties involved. I am a student from Reb Avrohom Reichman, I learned in his cheder for over a year - about 17 years ago - and he was, and still is, a very chovisher, ehrlicher, derhoibener yid! He probably did what every melamed - and every parent - occasionally do, and that is give a shmais or two on the backside, which is absolutely nothing wrong or unusual. In today's world, this practice of slight punishment is called "sexual abuse". Reb Avrohom never ever did anything more than that! This lowlife Joel Engelman, is nebech a dropout empty headed lowlife, who became a drug addict at the age of 17, and was - leider, leider - seen a few times smoking pot on Shabbos Kodesh! He is trying to pull a dirty tactic on a prominent eideler Yid. It's a shame to see how people comment here with such idiotic statements without having the slightest knowledge of what is going on.גורו לכם מיום הדין, גורו לכם מיום התוכחה

Aug 28, 2008 at 01:14 PM Community Psychotherapist Says:
Yes, Joel Engelman is unfortunately no longer frum. Yes, he belongs to a heavy metal band. But that is no reason to discount his story. On the contrary, if any of you know anything about sexual abuse victims that have been molested by people of the clergy would know that this is a reason for the victims to turn away from religion. Here is a man that is supposed to represent yiddishkeit in it's purest form, here is a man that these children are supposed to learn from, suppposed to look up to; And they were nebach betrayed in the worst of ways. Yiddishkeit becomes a very conflicting idea to them. Is this what you (clergy) are supposed to represent? Such hypocracy? I could go on and on explaining the psychology behind this. It still remains very cloudy for people that have fortunately never experienced being abused or have never had to deal with abused victims on a daily basis. Being sexually molested as a young child or teenager is not like being punched in the face. That pain goes away. Sexually abused victims pain and torture never goes away. They are scarred for life. This is a psychological issue. Their lives become a mess. Every case plays out differently, but the common denominator is that they live with the haunt forever. Let's not condemn Mr. Engelman for leaving the fold - so quickly. Rabbi Reichman most very likely is the cause of this. Kudos to Mrs. Engelman for going public with her story. It took a lot of courage for you to come on to the Dov Hikind program. Let's hope that the tachlis will be that I will have much less parents and children to council on this topic and hopefully our yeshivos will realize the seriousness of this and literally clean house of these nebach sick people. They can get jobs in any other profession. Just keep them away from our teiere kinderlach. Rabbossai, child molesters cannot heal themselves with a warning from their respective menahalim. They need therapy to heal themselves, and keep them away from children. I hope I make myself clear: The fact that you know someone to be a choshuve ehrliche yid does not detract from a sick secret side that they may have to themselves. It is not something they flaunt to the public. They may be choshuv and ehrlich in every other area, but they have this psychotic perversion in their minds that you don't know about. Knowing the alleged victimizer in a positive light does not supply anything in his defense. It is time to show compassion to the unfortunate alleged victims and show them that we believe them and will try to do what we can to help them. Part of why we don't hear these stories come out till years later is because the child always has a fear that he won't be believed along with other facets such as being under the manipulative spell of the abuser. May Hakb"h show his middah of rachamim im these upcomin yemei horachamim and give these tortured children/adults some closure for what they have gone through, and may sexual molestation be wiped out from amongst us. Amen V'Amen.

After reading many of the above comments, I'm satisfied that Joel has picked the legal route, as it seems that many people will never believe that "derhoibener yiden" can be molesters.
The Catholic community had the same problem; they couldn't believe that their "derhoibener galochim" can be molesters. The church played on those misconceptions and they were only bought to their knees by the legal system.
Our chadorim are no different, but what a shame that we need the Goyishe judiciary to force on Satmar commonly understood humane principles.

Nothing New - The purpose of bringing it up is to ensure that this sicko doesn't have the opportunity to get near children again, and to ensure that the yeshivas are more careful and react properly to these situations.
In fact, as you son was a victim (and I'm sorry that your son and the rest of your family had to go through the emotional pain of dealing with this), you may have an OBLIGATION to pursue this issue until you feel comfortable that the perpetrator has limited or no access to children. You also have the obligation to ensure that the Yeshiva realizes that they have to deal with these issues.
I cannot recommend what method you should use to achieve your obligation. I can understand if you don't wish to do it in a public manner such as Engelman, but do it you must! One way or another!

a)being the times we live in anything is possible so its high time we took proaction instead of reaction when its too late!!
there should be be cctv installed in all classrooms(if any suspicions or accusations are made the cctv can tape as well should the need arise),sound listening devices, and under any circumstances should there be locks on classroom doors!! the above would go along way to stop any individual who has preverted intentions etc
these steps would benefit the rebbe as well as the children as one who is being suspected w/o reason will be able to prove the accusations are unfounded and the parents/children will be happy and protected being their is always a menahel or office that can see and hear anything going on in the classroom that isnt normal and zero in on any abnormal behavior. should the rebbe have any other motive besides punishing/hitting the child (which is another discussion in and of itself if the old way of hitting should still be practiced today)it will all be black and white and wont end up an issue of he said child said (or child doesnt say)etc
of course this wouldnt work for the menahls private office but im sure their r ways to protect children from the menahel as well leave doors open etc
if this is what has to be done to prtect our children its a small price to pay and all should
be in aggreement to this plan

You don't know what this Rabbi may or may not have done unless you were there - in which case you may be a victim or accessory. Abuse takes minutes in school and because he is great in shul doesn't mean he can't be a sexual predator.
You don't know why the alledged victim is as screwed up as he may or may not be - alledgedly he was molested.
That's why they will have their day in court - its just a shame the case wasn't brought 14 years ago - with a criminal charge.
And its a shame that people still don't bring charges against other Rabbis and Teachers whether physical or sexual or emotional abuse.

Aug 28, 2008 at 04:18 PM Setting The Record Straight Says:
#1 Reichman failed...failed... a lie detector test given to him at the behest of UTA during Chol Hamoed Pesach. He failed directly on the questions of molestation and not on the question of whether he hit the children!
#2 UTA promised Joel that he would no longer have a job with them - this included his chazakedig job with Satmar Bungalows during the summer months. They also said Reichman was being sent for therapy.
#3 UTA made Reichman leave - he did not return to his class after Yom Tov and stayed away for the rest of the term. (the end of June)
#4 UTA's greatest fears were criminal charges against them, and an even greater fear of other victims, seeing Joel's success with ousting a protected pedophile, copying him - and what a disaster that would be (for the school).
#5 Their legal research showed that the statute of limitations on this crime expired June 24 '08 - ergo no fear of legal prosecution. To deal with their second fear of copycat acts they needed at all cost to re-hire Reichman and defend him, which they promptly did on July 1st at Satmar Bungalows in White Lake.
#6 To UTA it mattered not at all that they were betraying Joel and stabbing him in the back and playing him for a fool. They'd done this previously with others and gotten away with it. Their credo is Might makes Right!
#7 From July 1st, Joel's family (not understanding UTA's agenda) repeatedly begged and pleaded with UTA, Satmar Bungalows, their Dayanim, their administrators, independant Rabbonim, community activists to help avoid a potential tremendous Chilul Hashem and send Reichman away from contact with young boys - to no avail! (In fact, Reichman himself is a Korban of their machinations. Had UTA not rehired him, the innocent members of his family would not have had to suffer the consequent shame and humiliation they now have to face).
#8 UTA missed an awesome opportunity to act Al Pi Torah and Al Pi human decency - they should have continued to keep Reichman away, and furthermore they should have made every effort to help Joel heal! UTA should be made to pay for their cruelty in sacrificing a Jewish soul!

Yes, in 2008 any bum could just go and anyone he has an old account with for raping, molesting, abusing, assaulting and what else.. and now you go and deny it after thousands of readers saw it in the news, and some "extra intelligent" self hating morons will go to blog sites to add fuel to the flame with their non sense, without checking out any facts.
I guess it pays for some hoodlums to go on drugs and shtick, and then sue and blame your teacher..

Yoeli is not a drug addict, not a bum & not a mechallel Shabbos he is home every Shabbos with his family, he is a very sad bochur whose life has been destroyed by this melamed. They are trying their best to cope with the terrible consequences of the molestation. Hopefully all you people who are blaming Yoeli will never have to go through something like this with your own children. We are all really ignorant of the terrible damage molestation can do to children & Hashem should help we should never have to learn about it first hand. It is real Shfichas Domim. Aug 28, 2008 at 08:17 PM Jacob Green Says:
It is fact that everyone who is involved in community affairs knows, that in the past UTA got rid of several melamdim for minor suspicions of misbehavior. They are very sensitive to these issues and would get them out of the way based on minor actions that could possibly be linked with acts of misbehavior in attempt to nip them in the bud before anything serious can happen. The staff at UTA is also as smart to know that a person who is dressed in ultra chasidic garb can still be SICK and therefore no one is exempt just for being who he is or how he dresses.
The talk is about a melamid who everyone who knows him, (and knows him very well) know that he is a yiras shumayim. This Yirah is contagious in his classroom, as his countless students can testify.
On the other hand, charging him is a boy who declared himself an atheist, who is al pi halacha considered an "apikoros". He is trying to justify his actions by blaming his unsuccessful fate on his melamid. He is a son propelled by his mother who came through on the Dov Hikind radio show as an innnocent mother who is sticking up for her child. But in fact Mrs. Engelman is far from the innocence she portrays. She is known in the community for many years as one of the activists who push woman with seperation issues to fabricate and accuse their husbands with sexual abuse charges. Her mind is full of garbage, she lives in the filth 24/7. She leads these battles and actually follows men on the streets to scream after them with the dirtiest words. There are countless victims who can support what I've mentioned and add much more.
I am sure that story is yet another link in the long chain of her sad history of shmitz and chatzifah.
Mrs. Engelman, u know the truth it would be wise if erev rosh chodosh elul you do teshuvah, there is a cheshbon for every bit of tzar you inflict on innocent victims. Every tear fills up the cup...

In the absence of any evidence, the lie detector results would be a good start. Granted the lie detector is not 100% failproof, why was it not at least mentioned? That would've given them a real head start with the judge. When going to court you put all your cards out, you don't pick and choose, especially if you don't have any more compelling or convincing evidence.
They didn't put it in because it would quickly be verified that it never happened.

If people like u would have opened their eyes and stop living some fantasy, Cheder Menachem in Los Angeles wouldn't have had to deal with child molestation that wound up costing over $500,000. B"H the minute the admin found out about the molestation, the teacher (Motti Yomtov) was immediately removed from the classroom and the school spent $$$$$$ for psychologists to help the kids work it out. Of course, before he came to LA, he was teaching in NY and that school hushed everything up. Cheder Menachem had to clean up NY's mess and "men darf nisht reden, nisht bar unz" mentality.

Aug 28, 2008 at 10:18 PM Mordy Neuman Says:
Dreidel, you are the only “opposing” commentator on this forum that I respect. At least you acknowledge that the problem exists. The others ignorantly shut their eyes and scream that they see no fire. Regardless of what side you pick on THIS incident, the fact remains that many, many, way too many sweet innocent boys and girls in our community are repeatedly molested by people they look up to—namely, moral figures and family members. This is a fact that has been proved in many cases with DNA and/or surveillance. So blindly screaming that the problem does not exist is utter foolishness and makes you look like Wahabi radicals who deny the holocaust ever took place. This is our holocaust today!
Having established the existence of the problem, I wish to reiterate what others have expressed above that indeed this is a sickness that is not exactly identified with a personal medical tag (like diabetic patients wear); people who suffer from this are extremely secretive and discreet about it. And unfortunately this plague does not avoid the otherwise moral figures in the community. In other words (if you haven’t figured it out by now): the “sheine yid in shul“ or the “sincerely nice and quiet neighbor” may indeed have serious psychotic issues and without help will result in others getting hurt. Learn from history and from the multitudes of well documented cases.
And finally, this is the alleged story with this Engelman: The parents approached the teacher and quietly asked him to leave his position so that other kids don’t get hurt. When he refused and made a tumult some askunim got involved and hired a private investigation firm who conducted a polygraph test on the teacher (Reichman). He failed the lie detector test miserably. At that point the teacher was forced out of his position from the school. At a later time when the family discovered that the teacher was still at his position at the school and inquired how come that is the case, the Yeshivah (Satmer) basically said: Haha, the statute of limitation has just expired. (You can listen to Mrs. Engelman giving this story to Dov Hikind http://www.vosizneias.com/18867/2008/08/04/brooklyn-ny-dov-hikind-puts-yeshivas-on-notice-with-harsh-warning-i-am-going-to-publicly-shame-you-if-you-harbor-rebbe-molesters/)
Now, this story either happened or did not happen, but it is not a “he said/she said” situation. It is very verifiable because the polygraph test results either exist or do not. Joel has been consistent in his story since he was 14 to those around him or they can attest that they never heard him say that before. There are psychiatrists whom he has seen for years, and documents to support it, or no documents exist. There are askunim who dealt with this is the past and can attest to that (one apparently included his comment above) or they do not exist. There are other boys who came forward saying they were molested as well by this teacher, or they do not exist. I don’t see how people can say that this is all made up when there is evidence on the table. When disputing if a house burnt down or not all you got to do is drive by and see for yourself if there is a house or ashes. Now, since I did not examine the evidence myself, I need to follow my intuition: If caring parents, askunim, psychiatrists, investigators, and Dov Hikind ran with the case, I find it hard to believe that it was all the pigment of some punk’s imagination. (You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of people some of time, but you can't fool all of the people all of time) And if you do believe that it was all made up than you are obligated to bite your tongue until after you examine the evidence and decide that it’s all a hype.
So, to Anonymous “08-28-2008 - 3:52 PM” I want to say the following: a) you are contradicting yourself by saying “i understand that its bothering you what happened to your son” while you are saying “but you know very well @ the bottom of your heart that its not true” and b) if you claim to know the Engelman’s so well why not approach them and ask for them to disclose with you some pieces of evidence? Or is your comment “you know very well @ the bottom of your heart that its not true” really a secret code as saying: “If you know what’s good for you say that nothing happened”? because if that’s what you’re implying that you can run back into the same spider hole Sadam came out from because those days are over, my friend.
A few years ago I wrote an article on a similar controversial topic and one lady very harshly criticized me for “making up these stories.” The following was my response to her and this is what I will leave all of you holocaust deniers with:
“Saying that you have more experience than the author and then saying that what he is saying is pure bluff, is a fair contradiction. You obviously don’t have your share of experience if you don’t believe my words.
Innocence is a good thing for those who are not subjected to suffer from it. I sincerely hope that those around you will not suffer from your ignorance.
That hopefully being the case, I may wish to encourage you to stay innocent, there is nothing like a pure heart, but just like you’ll get your hands bloody in order to save someone’s life, sometimes you must look at the other side to know how to handle it when it hits you in the face.“

But Yoily is determined to follow thru on this. He is determined not to let a child molester back to a classroom of future victims.
And all you henchmen out there:
I hope your child comes home one day with a changed l'evish, and notifies you that he has joined a heavy metal band, and after four years of pure hell you find out thru therapy that your child was a victim of a very chusheve yid that is being protected by a very powerful moised, and its henchmen like you.

Aug 28, 2008 at 11:40 PM Shaul Boruch Says:
In all seriousness, how can any frum person deny a) that there is a significant problem of molestation in the yeshiva system in general, and b) deny the due process rights of any person who comes forward as a victim regardless of that person's current religious status.
I mean these are our children we are talking about. No community can, with any expectation of sincerity, claim the moral high ground as the Torah would have us do, while we fail to protect and defend those among us who are vulnerable, and in particular our children.
It is mind boggling how the yeshivas fail to remove an alleged predator pending investigation time and time again. I have no doubt that legislation will ultimately be passed removing private scool administrations from the equation. It will take the goyim to legislate how yeshivas deal with this issue - thats how low the greste gedoilim we're orphaned with have sunk.

I am very proud that VIN posted this story.
It is taking way too long for the Jewish / Heimish world to come to terms with the real issues we are facing.
We have rabbis busy screaming to "get the bums off the streets" and to "throw troubled kids to boot camps" etc.
What about dealing with the REAL issues, and trying to find ways to protect ourselves. Have we sunk so low? The rug is full, and there in no room to sweep anything under it anymore.
I URGE ANY AND ALL VICTIMS OF ABUSE TO COME OUT AND MAKE A STANCE! I know it will be hard, but until the victims come out, and we start putting these animals away, this will continue. There is no din of Lashon Hora for these chayos, I don't care what the corrupt rabbis say. We need to warn the world, and the only way to do this is to expose these people.
As a parent, I am already scared, and my children are young.
We live in crazy times, and we need to fight back.
EXPOSE THESE ANIMALS, ON THE NET AND IN COURT! DESTROY THEM, AND IF YOU ARE UPSET THAT IT HURTS THEIR FAMILIES, WHO CARES, MAYBE IF PEOPLE REALIZE THAT THIS WILL EFFECT OTHER PEOPLE THEY LOVE, PERHAPS THEY WILL STOP, IF EXPOSING EVEN SAVES ONE VICTIM, IT WAS WORTH IT, THIS IS RETZICHA, AND THE GEMARA SAYS, "HE WHO SAVES ONE LIFE, IS AS IF HE SAVED THE WORLD", LET'S DO IT, ONE AT A TIME.

I would rather see that man (and others like him) behind bars, and added to the sexual predator registry, then get his dirty money.
Anyone who is defending this man, is either in denial or completely ignorant.
When something terrible like this happens to a child, (by someone who is supposed to protect them and be a role model) they are haunted with this abuse for the rest of their life. Most of these children never tell anyone what happened to them, they are ashamed, embarrassed, and afraid no one will believe them. They have emotional problems to deal with FOREVER!
So for anyone who is defending this TERRIBLE person, because they happen to be Jewish, or a Rabbi, Let us see how you would think of this person if they abused you, or if they God forbid, abuse your little boy or girl.
There is no amount of money to make up for this. I pray that this individual, (and other's out there, who were abused like him) is able to recover and lead a normal life, and have this HORRIBLE incident erased from their memories.

Rabeim as well working with kids can get a height in their level, which is human. Those of you who wonder why there arent more victims coming forward, from all these naive comments you have some of your answers. The victim of sexual abuse can not be compared to any other type of abuse. This damages a person for life! When someone does overcome it and takes the courage to come forward, look at the reaction of the people! Everyone is going to take the family apart.. ruin them.. say he is crazy, on drugs.. and will do whatever it takes to shut the victim up. Dont think victims do it out of the revenge. They simply can not go on in life knowing that the abuser is still aroung children. They cant have menucha. I dont understand for what normal reason the institutions and the rest of you feel the need to protect the abusers? WHY? Do you think Hashem is with you at this?! The Shechina is crying!!!

It's people with that mentality, who say to individuals who come to them for help in situations such as these, and tell them either, it never happened, or they should keep their mouths shut because it will bring embarrassment to the rabbi and to the yeshiva, or they tell this poor desperate child that THEY did something to make that happen to them.
This is not a case of Loshon Harah. Someone who engages in such disgraceful & disgusting acts are rashaim, and don't deserve such leniency from the Jewish people or from anyone else for that matter.
The people who support these criminals sicken me. You are also giving the impression to other's that you condone such acts, or maybe you are guilty of these crimes as well. Hmm...

As somebody who is informed about this ongoing case it breaks my heart for the parties concerned.
There is no doubt that Yoily Engelman was molested by this rebbe many years ago. To deny that truth is to thrust another knife in the victim's back.
As anybody familiar with the workings of schools and camps knows, there are unfortunately the rare times that pedophiles have successfully infiltrated under the guise of aidelkeit, erlichkeit etc.
UTA, as well as other moisdos - with the help of knowledgeable askanim (like David Mandel of Ohel)- have, upon discovering some of these perverts in their midst, instigated them to leave under other pretexts, thus protecting all the innocent involved (including the perpetrators' families.)
As Mrs. Engelman detailed in her interview on Dov Hikind's show, her son revealed the truth to her when he was almost 20 years old, having kept this a secret all the years. She also told of not realizing the magnitude of Yoily's trauma for the next two years.
During all this time, UTA (with new and divided hanhalas) was unaware of this rebbe's transgressions since nobody had ever come forward.
Even now that the story is out for several months, not one other parent has come forward, even in secret.
Despite that, nobody at UTA denied the veracity of the complaint, and they were very pleased that Reichman did not return after Pesach (following the Engelmans' private letter to him, and after having failed the polygraph test.)
The assumption was that another ugly situation was successfully resolved.
Where I have a problem with this lawsuit is that Yoily is lumping Reichman's summer job in Lapidus with UTA and faulting them.
UTA was not even aware that he was hired independently by Lapidus since he was paid by the bungalow colony itself.
The zeman hasn't started yet in W'msbg, where Reichman wasn't even scheduled to return, so why the lawsuit?
Mrs. Engelman had asserted that if her family were reassured that the rebbe would no longer be in the yeshiva they would be satisfied and keep things under wraps. So why jump the gun?
I have no sympathy for Reichman himself because he was given the opportunity to walk away with his (and his large family's) name intact. Look what he has brought on to the innocent around him.
What was he thinking? Is he in such denial?
The bottom line is:
1- WARN YOUR CHILDREN - BOYS AND GIRLS - THAT NOBODY, INCLUDING FAMILY MEMBERS, IS PERMITTED TO TOUCH THEM WHERE THEY ARE COVERED BY THEIR UNDERWEAR.
2- TELL THEM THAT IF ANYBODY SO MUCH AS TRIES TO TOUCH THEM TO ALWAYS COME TO YOU, NO MATTER WHAT THE MOLESTER SAYS OR THREATENS.
3- ASSURE THEM THAT YOU WILL ALWAYS BELIEVE THEM AND PROTECT THEM. (How many parents have compounded the trauma by questioning or accusing the child of fabrications?)
4- FOLLOW UP BY CONTACTING THE AUTHORITIES IN CHARGE AND DON'T LET UP UNTIL THEY HAVE ADDRESSED THE ISSUE.
THE ERA OF SWEEPING THINGS UNDER THE RUG ARE LONG OVER.
HASHEM YERACHEM!!

Andy, you didn't read right. I wasn't mentioning melamdim menivulim in UTA. I was only explaining that UTA has been proven to be very sensitive with these issues. If they become aware of any information that some people can imply as unusual or inappropriate, even if it's nothing, they will be over precautious. We can be sure if they would have any suspicions on him they would get rid of him. They have no benefit of harboring a dangerous man. Just because one apikoros wants to get back at at melamed that was too strict with him, doesn't make this allegation fact.
I'm not trying to stick up for UTA, I don't send my kids to their mosod, nor daven in their shuls.
In reference to Mordy N. I don't see the fire burning nor the ashes remaining. What evidence are you refering to? The lie detector test?
It is 2008! It is well aware that the lie detector can detect an increased heart rate due to extreme nervousness and tension during the test. Furthermore, any brave or wise individual may he be guilty, can easily pass a lie detector test. Whereas an innocent person of weaker character may fail the test due to tension. That is why a lie detector test is not considered evidence in court.

I don't think any parent of an 8 year old would leave their own child with this "choshuve yid", in a room, all alone, even though it has not been "proven" in a court of law, yet.

A) Nothing here is fact, its hearsay and accusations and sometimes facrication to be provocative to fuel more comments.
B) This case is a lawsuit not a criminal trial.
C) In our judicial system everyone is innoocent until proven guitly.
D) If reputation counts for anything (until something is proven to destroy it), on one hand you have a teacher with 20 plus years experience, who over those years has had more than 700 students, many of whom vouch for his yiras shamayim.
On the other hand there is ONE off the derech dropout who needs to be defended that he is not a drug addict, mechalel shabbos and apikores!
E) Even if the lawsuit is won. This guy is a career teacher, there won't be much to collect from him.
F) To the credit of Satmar they did suspend him back in April and they did an investigation and put him thru a lie detector test. It seems that they were taking the proper action thus their decision to rehire him to be a teacher for the summer was based on their findings. otherwise why did they bother with the lie detector test etc.
F) Satmar is guilty for the terrible spelling, grammar and English that is being presented by its students in this comment section. Even those who try to disguise themselves with big words and spell-check use bad grammar.

which through a hired (nisht fun unzere) professional all the (alleged) victims from this Rebbe could come forward and state their experiences and remain anonymous (so they don't need to be further traumatised & the stigma etc)- this way we could have a tally of how many victims there were. If Yoily was the only one then this is probably a made up story but if as I suspect many others come forward then it is unfortunately probably true. "Uviarto Harah Mikirbecho" It is shameful for the Moisad if this is true and I'm sure they are petrified by the potential liability but it is much worse and more shameful to try to cover it up and intimidate those coming forward - the best approach is to cooperate fully with any investigation and show a zero tolerance regarding this issue. You come out
looking much better regardless of the outcome.

Besides for which, Lapidus, as well as the 3 Dayunim residing there, and the manager and everyone in charge there, each one of them were warned repeatedly, each one of them recieved a letter stating that its in their hands to prevent this big chilil hashem from happening. This is a case of he said and he said. These cases are very hard to prove in court since this type of activity usually occurs in secrecy. Also, the time factor is another issue that usually favors defendants since there is a statue of limitations on most cases except for murder. I think the reason it was only brought now against this rebbe after so many years of the alleged occurences, is to make people aware that such activity does happen and that people in the heimishe communities should be made aware and act accordingly. I don't believe in din torahs since they can be corrupted and can be swayed with money and other influences without any consequences unlike the goyishe courts. I should also mention that I myself was molested as a child not by a rebbe but by an older bucher when I was about 8 years old in Yeshiva. So, those who say that molestation by heimishe chevra does not and cannot occur are only fooling themselves. These people are trying to live a faily tale life of alles is kusher veyusher as long as it does not happen to them. The facts are we are all busor v'dom and have the same taivos like everyone else. Some of us have better control than others, but for those who do not, we must do everything possible to protect our kinderlach and others from these dispicable predators. I want to also add that I don't think my being molested had any lasting effects, but who knows? Some people can deal with this better than others. Who are we to say, "...get over it and move on with your life..."? Some people are psycholigically fragile and when this happens to them, they completely fall apart and are usually scarred for life.

I cannot understand. How can people have such "rishous" (wickedness) and convict a person based on "hearsay". Think about yourself, wouldn't you want to be considered innocent until proven guilty? If that doesn't apeal to you, then think of what you're going to do when his namer will be cleared; will you ask for forgiveness? Should he forgive you??? I'm not a Satmar'er and don't know this person, but based on everything I heard I consider this man innocent; shoudn't you?

Nobody is claiming that every single child was sexually abused in Satmar. Nonetheless, good on you for speaking openly with your children on the subject.

To those bashing the individuals who were molested as children, who became, non frum, anti frum, bitter, wanting revenge, or anything else relating to that, have no right to judge them for who they became, or how they feel.
Since you never had to endure such horrifying experiences these boys or girls have, you are in no place to give mussar and look down on them.
Why do you think some of them hate frum people or feeling such hate?
could it be because their rebbi, an adult, someone they're supposed to look up to, someone who is supposed to protect them from being exposed to such horror, betrayed their trust. Embarrassed them. Took away their childhood innocence, gave them emotional difficulties, and nightmares they have to deal with & live with for the rest of their lives!
The argument that this victim is a so called "bum" and the rabbi is a choshiva highly respected man, shows how you don't care WHO the person is inside, it's how he LOOKS on the outside, Yet another reason why these poor children wont come forward.

I was grilled by my parents years ago about a molester and if he hit on me. I answered no.....in truth he DID molest me. And molest me bad...
So if your child denies it, its not worth a cent. My molester threatened to hurt me and my parents if I told. And besides, he kissed me and forced me to kiss him in order to degrade me. He knew I would be to embarassed to tell a soul that I kissed him, so of course I lied to my parents. Carried this little dirty secret in my heart for years....till my heart was no more. And now I want revenge. BTW revenge is permitted here "min Hatora". Nikomo is only when the source of conflict is monetary.

Anon@10:13, you are absolutely correct.
Anon@4:25, please take note. Talking with your children after-the-fact is often useless, due to the perpetrator's threats and control via humiliation. Talking with your children is most effective if done BEFORE-the-fact, BEFORE your children are molested.
In particular, parents should explain to their children the specific lures and tactics that are commonly used by perpetrators on unsuspecting children. Knowledge is no guarantee that your children will escape harm, but it DOES make them much more difficult for the predator to snare.
Just as BURGLARS tend to pass by the houses with good preventative security measures, PEDOPHILES tend to pass by the children with good preventative security measures. It's an apt analogy.

The man failed a lie detector test. I know it hurts but it is documented. It was looked into by the attorney before he took the case; he is no fool. And to all of you saying that it is not admissible in court, I have some news for you:
Sexual offenders are now routinely polygraphed in many states of the United States and it is often a mandatory condition of probation or parole. In Texas, a state appellate court has upheld the testing of sex offenders under community supervision and has also upheld written statements given by sex offenders if they have committed a further offense with new victims. These statements are then used when a motion is filed to revoke probation and the probationer may then be sentenced to prison for having violated his or her probation.
A significant number of Federal appeals courts have upheld polygraph testing for Federal probationers as well. The most recent decision was by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals regarding a New York sex offender.

It is so sad to read the many comments that are vilifying Yoely and his family. This is exactly why people are scared to come forward with incidents of sex abuse because so many will turn the tables and not only say that they are fabricating the story but will name call and seek to destroy their character. Do they have this need because otherwise they would not be able to deal with the sad fact that there are unfortunately frum people that have a perverse, sick need to abuse children?

Why all the talk whether it is true or not. Why not let the US court system figure this out. Let there be the fair trial. If something, considering the king of (mis-) cooperation expected from the Yeshiva staff, the boy won't win even if he's right.
If however the Rabbi is found guilty, who is low enough to suggest that we should keep it under the rug, and have more innocent gems exposed to this?
TO ALL WHO SAY STUFF ABOUT THE ENGLEMANS:
Maybe The Englemans are nuts. i don't know them. But I do know what was and is going on in the Yeshivas, most Yeshivas unfortunately. Regardless of what this boy is, if you don't like him, if they really are bad people, if he's a dope (as suggested above), it all comes down to the truth. Did it happen or not.
No dope/bad person/crazy person should be put through this.
TO ALL WHO SAY THEY KNOW THE RABBI AND HE'S A GOOD MAN:
First of all, you would never know! You may know the person for a lifetime, but not know his ugly part. This is a weakness that any person could have, and for obvious reasons never reveal but to the victim(s).
In my times (over 15 years ago) I knew numerous incidents like this by more honorable (?) individuals as Avorohom Reichman is.
BOTTOM LINE:
It is not about personality-bashing and pre-assumptions. This is about the truth.
If it turns out that the buy falsely alleged a innocent person, he should be treated worse than a molested, as the Jewish point-of-view is on a false witness. But we need to keep an open mind of the possibility that the lack of evidence available (at this stage) may not proof that the crime never happened.
One way or another, the problem exists, and this type of crime happens.
However if the rabbi is found guilty, OMG this is so terrible. Not only was the Rebbe a Sheagatz, but the Yeshiva should be closed. Yes, the very big Satmar Yeshiva is good for nothing if it happened on their watch, and not only have they not detected it, not only have they not screened their educators throughroly, but they have received complains and suppressed it. They are not trustworthy.

So much nonesense in such a small space. There are many types of situations, and lumping them all as one is mind bogling. When one Rebbi is guilty - the entire Yeshiva doesn't have to close down (even if you don't like that Yeshiva). As a kid in camp, a Rebbi rubbed himself against me; I didn't understand it at the time, but I did see it as something wrong, so I kept my distance from him from then on. Fast forward, now he is a decent father of a family, and I'm sure he hasn't molested anybody. Should I Chas VeShalom ruin his life? For what? So ladies & gentleman; there is quite a distance from my story, and REAL molestation. I am afraid that 99 percent of all the whining here are close to my story then real molestation. Also don't lump children & bochurim. Molestation in any form is wrong, but let's call a spade a spade; not calling a fender-bender a major accident.

let me throw the following out for food for thought.
I have a question
If the molester cant do teshuvah because he is of a character/personality that has no freedom of choice .then he falls under the category of oines himself.and he is not to pay for his unaltered state of being.
on the other hand if he does have(bechire) and has the means to control his behavior then we owe him the same that we owe for engelman(a biselle Rachmunes) because if engelman was molested by the alleged person it is fair to say that the alleged molestor was molested by someone when he was at the same age as engelman.it is a known fact that the opressed become the oppresors.
for a community such as the folks of above who are not intellectual prone but rather emotion driven, may i ask where is your gentle heart for the two members among you, the alleged oppresor and the alleged victim.
Isnt your motto? "I feel therefore i am".or "we are"

@anonymous 4:39
How do you know that he never molested anyone again. Do you think he would tell you?
I agree that you should make a distinction between different kinds of sexual abuse. But even molestation without rape can have very adverse effects on people's lives.
And the worst thing is that the victim tends to get victimised a second time when he/she opens the mouth, while the perpetrator remains a bekuvedig person and people even pity him, because they think that he was accused unjustly.
By the way, this is certainly not an exclusive problem of the haredi community or of religious communities in general. The perpetrator will take whatever means he has to defend himself. In religious surroundings he will say "look at me, I am a Rabbi, how could anyone imagine that I do something like this". In non-religious circles he will say "I just wanted to show him/her how it works" "He/she completely misunderstood my intentions".
They are very clever. And completely unscrupulous. It is very typical that they use "moral arguments" in their favour, although they do not at all believe in it.

Special Report: Sexual Molestation
May 18, 2007
Baltimore’s rabbis have spoken out. Both of the
major rabbinic organizations have delivered strong messages in recent weeks on the issue of sexual abuse within the community.
Indeed, the Vaad Harabbonim, the Rabbinical Council of Greater Baltimore, sent a letter signed by 23 of its rabbis to the Orthodox community, dated April 11.
The Baltimore Board of Rabbis, the umbrella group including modern Orthodox, Conservative, Reform and Reconstructionist rabbis, followed suit with an advertisement in this week’s edition of the Baltimore Jewish Times.
“There is no subject more painful for us to discuss than the issue of sexual abuse within our community,” stated the Vaad’s letter. “Yet at this point we believe it is the subject most necessary to address. We must acknowledge that this horrible form of abuse exists –– and has existed for generations –– in our community as well. This issue must be confronted directly and we believe that this discussion can be a first step towards the necessary and achievable goal of ridding our community of this scourge.”
The letter went on to state that abuse can ruin an individual’s sense of self, ability to trust others and ability to engage in healthy, intimate relationships. The letter added that in the past, there were “mistakes” made in handling these situations.
“Abusers,” the letter stated, “were often not recognized for what they were, as it was too difficult to believe that otherwise good people could do such things, nor was it sufficiently appreciated what damage such acts could cause.
“Publicizing his status as abuser –– while causing enormous damage to his own family –– may be the only way to protect the community from him.”
Several rabbis also addressed the issue from the pulpit with their congregations.
The Board of Rabbis advertisement was jointly signed by the organization’s president, Rabbi Steven Schwartz of Pikesville’s Beth El Congregation and Marc J. Terrill, president of the Associated: Jewish Community Federation of Baltimore.
Part of the advertisement reads, “Once it was a shande (sin) to discuss this topic; now it is a shande to ignore it.
“All abuse is wrong and against the values of Torah, to which we are committed. The abuse of children, among the most vulnerable members of our communities, is especially reprehensible and demands our immediate attention and our commitment to eradicate it.”
“The stories [in the Jewish Times] have reminded us that this is an issue in the Jewish community,” said Rabbi Schwartz. “And since it is an issue in the community, we need to acknowledge the problem to do whatever we can to help the victims.
“Also, we have to be proactive so that this won’t continue to happen. This is a community moment to look at ourselves, and let’s put an end to this.”
