Brooklyn, NY - A Spike in Crime Has Williamsburg Wary |
|
Of Brooklyn’s police precincts, Williamsburg’s 90th, which encompasses the gentrifying South Side plus its central and east sections, has seen the greatest rise in crime over the past year — 13.49 percent — according to Compstat data.
The neighboring 94th precinct, which includes Williamsburg’s tonier North Side and Greenpoint, has seen a 6.38 percent crime hike — the borough’s second-highest increase.
“We don’t want to overstate the problem,” City Councilwoman Diana Reyna said. “But if we don’t do something, we’re going to have serious problems.” --
So far this year, the 90th precinct has seen 294 robberies (up 14.4 percent), 245 burglaries (up 15.5 percent), 384 grand larcenies (up 25 percent), 146 felony assaults (up 10.6 percent) and three murders compared to one from the same time last year.

slowly but surely we are getting connected to crown heights. I think that it is the fault of the housing authoritys what instead of taking in more jews in the area they are excepting people from the bronks and all over.

Ceown Heights is relatively quite safe so it's unfair to associate rising crime statistics in W'burg w/ problems nearby. Actually, the influx of undesirables into CH is a result of pple moving from W'burg into Bed-Sty and beyond.

The supposed crime wave is in the North part, Bedford extending to Greenpoint. The young new residents are mostly from out of New York and come home by subway, L train, at 2 AM, often also getting stone drunk at wee hours. It is not shocking that they become victims.

"ref", "lets hope that crime will go down 100%"- What was the point of your comment? Crime is on a one way trip.....only UP!. You might as well hope for winning a Lottery ticket out of there.

Just a little piece of info, the area where crime is up is mostly outside the jewish area, a lot of new ppl moved in here leaving there doors open and coming home late at night so it makes them easy targets

Anyone who really wants to know where in Williamsburg the crimes have occurred can contact their precinct. I assume that it's concentrated among the area settled by those "hipsters", not the heimish part, A drunken kid listening to his Ipod, talking on his cell phone, carrying his wealthy father's credit card and lots of cash, wondering from bar to bar at 2am is an easy target

Your comments are dangerously close to a blame the victim stance. That isn't very well tolerated on this particular site. That being said, I would say that one has to be constantly aware of ones surroundings, from a crime and safety/security standpoint. ( if you are wandering the streets drunk -you are not aware of anything....but that does not give a mugger the right to hold you up, though. People, if you feel that you must drink to excess-just do yourself and everyone else a favor and maybe sit on the couch with a bottle of booze and watch "CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASIM", or whatever.

It is true that the projects have more goyim and lower class people than ten years ago, thus increasing crime. Many families have fled the projects because of this. Some buildings of hundreds of apartments have only a few heimishe families left living there.
