Borough Park, NY - Maimonides Hospital Receives Top Ratings In Gov’t Report |
|
Borough Park, NY - Hospital Compare, the U.S. government web site that helps the public review the quality of care in hospitals, has just published the most recent data on mortality rates for heart attack, heart failure and pneumonia patients.
Of nearly 5,000 hospitals in the nation, only nine performed better than the national rate in treating heart attacks, 41 in treating heart failure, and 41 in treating pneumonia.
Maimonides Medical Center is the only hospital in the nation to perform better than the national rate in all three categories of patient care.
“This is excellent news for our patients and families,” said Pamela S. Brier, president and chief executive officer of Maimonides. “It’s gratifying for our staff to see that our relentless efforts to improve are making a significant difference in the quality of patient care.”
“Our patients tend to be older and sicker than average,” explained Dr. Edgar Lichstein, chair of medicine at Maimonides Medical Center. “In the face of that challenge, we rely heavily on evidence-based medicine. At the same time, our teaching environment encourages constant innovation in patient care.”
In 2007, Maimonides Medical Center was one of only three hospitals in the nation to achieve top rates for patient outcomes in heart attack and heart failure on the Hospital Compare web site. The medical center also has been commended for outstanding services by a number of independent rating organizations.

MAINOMIDES killed my cousins father by giving him overdose of drugs but because we dont allow autopsy we werent able to prove anything.
This hospital is antisemetic, they even admitted to hiring goons to scare orthodox Jews into thinking they were going to be attacked. Why? So they could convince them to sell to the hospital. If it were up to me I would BURN THE HOSPITAL TO THE GROUND...

The reason their ratings are so high, is that most of their patients use a sefer tehillim when they are there. It has nothing to do with the doctors or nurses.

The credit should be given to Hatzolah as first responders and intervention in record speed and and undivided devotion to their cause, that cardiac patient survive in record numbers, versus the rest of the country No Thanks To Miamonides, had it been left up to Miamonides alone, it would be somewhere on the bottom of that list, if it had made the list at all...

When I was in the Hospital over Shabbos, Yad Efraim was there with good tasty hot shabbos meals. Thanx to them they made my shabbos.
I must say the staff was very nice to me and had no problems at all. The Surgery staff, Floor staff, Administartion staff, were great nice people. Took some time to get a bed but that happens in every hospital.
The Emergancy Room needs some improvment!!!

People in Borough Park are having heart attacks younger than the nationwide average, but hence yielding a better survival rate. They get to the hospital quicker (thanks hatzolah). Maimonides should do a study on survival rates og religious jews vs gentiles.

MAZEL TOV MAIMONIDES MAZEL TOV.
Why can't we give credit where it is due? they have a great Cardiac team headed by the famous Dr. Jacob Shani who is well known in our community.
Most of the heart doctors are heimishe frummer people like Drs. Greengart, Moskowitz, Hollander, Kerstein, Greenburg, Borgen, Kaplowitz, and others. Why when heimishe people succeed in a area do we need to knock them. Is this what we are known for Rachmanim Beishunim and Gomlei Chasadim?
Maimonides has a great Cardiac team from their Cath Lab to Cardiac Surgery to Non invasive Cardiology!!! If chas veshulem a boro parker has a heart issue they are blessed to have such doctors right on our area.
Please lets not fall in to the trap of a few in our community who have tooken upon themselves to curse and yell whenever they hear or read the word Maimonides, for personal and selfish reasons. (As someone joked that some in BP curse, when they hear Mamonides mentioned at a shiur).
Lets congratulate OUR HEIMISHE FRUMMER cardiac team who have acheived such greatness and have such a low mortality rate. As it is said in the Chassidishe Velt ''Mit A Grois Doktor Kimt Mit Der Malach Refoel Alein''.
The same can be said for the Pulmonary stuff they excelled in, nu Dr. Tessler and Dr. Yitzchok Kupfer, Dr. Moshe Kerstein are Gevaldige doctors and yes mazel tov to your hatzlocha.
This hospital came a very very long way and is trying to get better as you read from the president's statement. Lets be open minded shoced doesnt work with the federal govt... as one blogger has commented above. Zei nisht kein naar!!!!
Lets start supporting and applauding the hospital when they do things right, if not we look like fools to them when we do have a legitimate issue to discuss. We do not want them to close their ears to the VAAD and the Bikur Cholims Yad Efraim, BP,Bobov, Sephardic, and HATZOLAH who have a great koach in the hospital and utilize it Letoivuseinu.
Lets face it a very decent hospital that excells in Cardiac and Pulmonary care.

obviously you did not give birth yet in this hospital, because if you or your wife would have you would have been cursing them, not praising!! I gave birth in January there, it was an horrific experience. Such mean & nasty nurses, its a shreck to be a patient there. After delivery I waited 7 hours till I was transfered upstairs to a room. and I waited in a hot small room it was so bad, the nurse there had a small fan blowing by her desk and all new kimpeturins were hot...can u imagine??? b'h my birth was quite easy but as any mom would say 'an easy delivery is also not easy' why cant they be more sensitive to new mothers???? for the first 7 hours of my daughters life i saw her only for a few minutes after delivery and then 7 hours later again!!!! such chutzpah!!! and when i finally did get upstairs, i saw that the nurses downstairs where gold according to the nurses upstairs, such rishas...such a racket at night I couldn't sleep, they were soooo noisy, when i finally did fall asleep i was woken an hour later to loud laughter....i dont think i ever slept for more than 2 hours in a row...it seemed like i was in a bar someplace not in a maternity ward. And btw, I spoke to many many moms who recently gave birth there and they all had similar stories...I can not understand where all these machers are...We give them sooo much $$$$$, k''yh so many jewish babies are born there...why cant they expand and be more accomidating to the moms..? I will probably go back there again since its close to home but I wish they improve.

The reliability of such hospital ratings (Healthgrades) was reviewed in the Journal of the American Medical Association in 2002. Their conclusion was that the rating are almost useless in determining which hospitals really give better care. Here are some exerpts:
Evaluation of a Consumer-Oriented Internet Health Care Report Card
The Risk of Quality Ratings Based on Mortality Data
Harlan M. Krumholz, MD; Saif S. Rathore, MPH; Jersey Chen, MD, MPH; Yongfei Wang, MS; Martha J. Radford, MD
JAMA. 2002;287:1277-1287.
Context Health care "report cards" have attracted significant consumer interest, particularly publicly available Internet health care quality rating systems. However, the ability of these ratings to discriminate between hospitals is not known.
Conclusion Hospital ratings published by a prominent Internet health care quality rating system identified groups of hospitals that, in the aggregate, differed in their quality of care and outcomes. However, the ratings poorly discriminated between any 2 individual hospitals' process of care or mortality rates during the study period. Limitations in discrimination may undermine the value of health care quality ratings for patients or payers and may lead to misperceptions of hospitals' performance.

secondly, Im sure if you were the patient upstairs and hospital would tell you to leave ontime to accomodate someones that is waiting for a bed for hours im sure you would leave on time.......

Yes, MMC has an outstanding cardiac team. Mazol Tov. But, what the MMC "bashers" need to focus on is --why aren't other MMC departments rated high as well? MMC is rated very average in most quality of care surveys. Those are the areas where pressure needs to be placed on MMC to improve.

Now you are aware that they have not only a great Cardiac team but a great Pulmonary team as well.
Now for the record the new ICU's are state of the art. The physical appearance is clean, fresh, new and magnificent. The staff from the residents to the nurses are great. (I had a personal friend who spent some time up there). The new pediatric floor is a master piece as well.
Lets applaud the progress and support the administration, and work with them to do even better.
Go maimonides Go.
Dont look to the east nor to the WEST......
Just look ahead, and continue doing what you are doing. The community wants great medical care, we hope that you will continue to accomodate us.
To my landsmen I will say if you issues bring it to the proper people in the hospital dont keep in the shul as it was mentioned above.

In spite of the avalanche of negative comment about the [mis]management at Maimonides Hospital, I can honestly state that my experience [with the hospital] has been a very positive one! Just to highlight one detail of the efficiency of the Emergency Room staff. After a change of shift, the incoming [med.] staff were [fully] updated by the outgoing medical crew! Yes, slipups happen! But in general, the entire medical staff who work at the hospital are dedicated and efficient! The long waits, sometimes, happen because they are understaffed and overworked!

Long wait?
When you get discharged in the morning it doesn't mean you saty till the evening, a hospital is not a HOTEl.
People get discharged and wait for their ride to come, husband to finish work. How do you want the beds should be cleaned when the paitent is still in bed and waiting, waiting for what? for their ride to take them home. TAKE A CAR SERVICE, so someone in the emergancy room could get a bed upsatirs.

Was brought there at 4am this past February with bad stomach discomfort/pain...was treated terribly and I have great insurance so that was no factor in my care...which for the record was horrible...discharged after 4 hours (still in pain) only to have my own doctor look at me that AM and have me sent right back. He made some calls and I received better care on the second visit to the ER..all in all the first visit at 4 am was just plain pathetic as for the quality of care...even the second visit didn't go great just better...I have easy veins to access and two nurses couldn't get an IV line in...kept on sticking me like a voodo doll.....still have marks on my left arm from that fun time!! Top rating give me a break!!!

If one wants or needs a nice beautiful lobby you are better off at Methodist,
but for good quality Cardiac Care I would suggest you go to Maimonides Medical Center. For a great Catherization Lab you got to go to MMC's Dr. Shani and Frankel, for Cardiac Surgery you take a yuchid mumcha like Israel Jacobowitz.
Dont get me wrong a new and fancy facility does help, but it is the medical care that really counts.
I have some news for you to if you are ready to give money to Maimonides towards a new lobby I am sure they will happily accept it and revamp their lobby.

Dear Boro Parker Yid:
All of these surveys are a bunch of hokum.
They are not based on personal visits and observations. They are based on medical billing records complied by the Hospital itself--"The fox guarding the henhouse."
JAMA and other professional medical publications have many articles debuking the validity and usefulness of both "outcome-based" and "process-based" ratings.
Needless to say, there is no effort at all to compare the records of allopathic medical facilities with homeopathic, Chinese, Indian, and other healing modalities.
There is not even an effort to compare American medical facilities with European medical facilities.
In school, this used to be called "marking on a curve." This means that the student who scores highest gets a mark of 100%, even if he gets half of the questions wrong.
Ralph Nader did a survey, in which he came up with the shocking sttistic that Doctors and hospital in the U.S. KILL 300,000 patients a year.
Stay away from doctors and hospitals, as if your life depends on it--it does!
