The shuttle includes 24-seat brand new passenger buses, free service for the first three months and rides that only cost $1 after the free service, reports app.com (http://on.app.com/1Dl2P5f). Seniors and passengers with disabilities ride for free.

The service has two routes right now – one from Westgate to downtown with multiple stops at the Beth Medrash Govoha yeshiva and Georgian Court University, and one from the former Job Link loop serving Lakewood Industrial Park. As more riders use the community shuttle, more routes will be added.

The service operates Sunday through Friday. There is no service on Saturdays because of the lack of demand from Orthodox Jewish residents.

The service, which started on March 17, came to fruition after NJ Transit offered a $1 million federal grant that will pay for nine buses.

Jay’s Bus Service received a multi-year contract from the Township Committee to operate the shuttle.

Great idea, there is a growing elderly population in Lakewood that can now get around. Even for youngsters, it gives them some mobility. Great project.

best idea yet- this will eventually help to solve the whole transportation issue for children going to school as well. Forget the busing- put in a great comprehensive mass transit system and let everyone ride it like we did growing up in Brooklyn. Kids, workers, elderly everyone.
