The new rule states that anyone wearing head covering and who will only have their picture taken by a person of the same sex or will only remove it in private will be taken to 1 Police Plaza for their photo, where there are more female officers and a private room for picture taking, according to NY Daily News (http://nydn.us/1yydPdM).

Head shots have to be taken with and without any head covering worn by suspects so that there is a picture showing a view of the head, ears and face.

The change in policy began after Muslim women raised concerns about removing their hijab in front of men, which is against their religion.

Tahanie Aboushi is a lawyer who sued the NYPD more than two years ago over the issue. She says the new policy won’t work because 1 Police Plaza is closed between midnight and 8 a.m., which will slow the arrest process.
