In a previously filmed ABC News interview that aired today, Derrick Hamilton said that he has yet to see any of the promised reward money offered by Jewish community members and a pair of city councilmen.

Hamilton actually received the first installment of his reward yesterday from Gary Schlesinger of UJCare, who gave the Brooklyn man $1,000 for his efforts in putting Julio Acevedo behind bars.

“He is an upstanding citizen,” Schlesinger told VIN News. “I congratulated him for doing what he did.”

While Hamilton told Jim Hoffer of ABC News that he was angry that he had yet to receive any reward money, Schlesinger noted that UJCare promised to pay the reward only after the person who killed the Glaubers was sentenced. Acevedo was sentenced on Monday for 25 years to life in the hit and run accident.

VIN News obtained a copy of UJCare’s original statement that offered the reward which reads, “A community social service and advocacy organization is offering a reward starting at $1,000.00 for the information leading to the arrest, conviction and sentencing of the perpetrator who drove the BMW last night on Kent Avenue corner Wilson Street in Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, NY causing the death of Mr. Nachman & Mrs. Raizy Glauber.”

Hamilton will soon be receiving the reward offered by members of the Jewish community.

“$5,000 from community leaders has been given to the Police Foundation to be used by the Crime Stoppers program in order to pay the reward,” said David Pollock, associate executive director and director of public policy and security at the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York.

Pollock explained that channeling reward money in cases like this through Crime Stoppers is done for a variety of reasons, including protecting the anonymity and safety of the person providing the information.

“We have given rewards to two people who gave us information that led to the convictions in the deaths of Yankel Rosenbaum and Ari Halberstam,” said Pollock. “There was no way the names of those people could be released in cases like that.”

The promised $5,000 from city councilmen David Greenfield and Stephen Levin was sent to the NYPD for Hamilton on Tuesday.

A statement released by Levin said that after being contacted by Hamilton regarding the reward, the two councilmen verified his information with the NYPD and advised Hamilton that the process would take a few weeks but that the matter was being taken care of.

“This week, a check was sent to the New York City Police Foundation for $5,000, which will provide the reward after they undergo their internal process. We are confident that the informant will be paid shortly and are grateful for his assistance.”

In a VIN News interview, community activist Isaac Abraham observed that since reward money is a powerful motivator in providing information it is imperative that it be paid promptly.

“It gives me great, great concern that this might jeopardize future people from … providing important information and confidential information … based on collecting reward money to apprehend a criminal.”

Schlesinger is a mentch. Nevertheless, Schlesinger should not have waited until Hamilton complained about not receiving any of his reward money. What the general public is left with is that the reward was only paid when Hamilton went public about not being paid. Period.

The money should be paid quickly and in full!! It’s a shame it took this long…

It didn’t take long. The guilty verdict, on which this was contingent, only happened this week. Calm down everybody.
