The building has been bought for around £1 million and will be turned into a synagogue and meeting rooms.
It is thought to be the first time a British pub has been used in this way.
Once the refurbishment is completed, it is estimated that 150 people will be able to use the complex at any one time for services or other activities.
The Bobovs hope that the building will be ready for use within “several months”. They expect the majority of members to move from shuls in Lampard Grove and Egerton Road.
Rabbi Ephraim Padwa of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations said he was “overwhelmed” by the purchase, adding that the new building would benefit the “flourishing Bobov community”.
Community member Ruth Goldberg said: “Everybody is pleased that the pub will be turned into a synagogue.
“This is the prime spot in the whole of Stamford Hill. It is a nice big building with two huge halls. There is a lot of potential but it is all subject to planning permission which we will submit.
“Everybody is looking for more space in the area, but it is not available.
“We have tried for a year to purchase the building. Because this is an Orthodox area, the pub’s sales have been declining, so it is a good deal for everyone.”
She hoped the community would rally around to help raise the necessary funds.
Meanwhile, staff at The Swan said this week that they were unaware of the sale.
“We don’t have many Jewish customers,” a barmaid confided. “But during the football season a few do come in.”
Some locals who have used the pub for years and are upset over the sale have set up a web site www.savetheswan.com to protest the sale.
WHICH BOBOV?
Will they serve liquor?
Let us all drink a L’Chaim
Yidden! Rather turn in a pub into a shul, than to turn in your shul into a pub.
wOW, WHAT A CHOMETZ NIGHTMARE cleaning job, come Pesach.
This is the shul I want to be at for Simhat Torah!!
Great place to make the kiddush.
nice job
ANother decent pub bites the dust
we hope the beer is included. lookin forward!!!!
i dont think it is nice of everyone pulling jokes I am delighted for the area that thry dont need to have the low life drunkers near their houses any more
anon 11:46 – git gezugt!!
It will become a good old Jewish Pub…….
No Happy Hour.. Separate seating only….
Adds a new meaning to “kiddush pub” oops, I mean “Kiddush club”
Well, I guess this just makes it official.
To many guys who go to shul, the place is nothing more than a pub to shmuzz, and to have some schnapps (“Kiddush Klub.”)
ITS FURE SURE THE SHUL OF RABBI MORDCHAI DOVID UNGAR CHASIDIM
The Brits serve warm beer, so it’s good it’s going!
BYOB= Bring Your Own Book
Murray 12PM. Why? do you think [and hope] that the Pubbers (hope there is such a word. If not, we’re making it up, now!) forgot a few cases of Scotch in the cellar or a side-room closet (cupboard, in Britishese)! Personally, I wish it was Bourbon!!!
Silly Britishers! They take such an exquisite Edifice (Building B’LA”Z) and turn it into a PUB!!!
[bigwheel] do you think saying [“we”] instead of [“I”] makes you sound smarter??? and whats the [deal] with all the (parentheses) and [brackets]-its sorta annoying
that takes care of drinking and driveing especially on weekend and holidays
how can it be ungars bobov if he says that they expect egerton road to move there. egerton road is benzions headquarters in london
in manchester we already have one (former) pub being used as a boys high school and another which will soon be used as a primary (elementary) school/cheder and shtieble
I wish them lots of hatzlocho and be able to make many simchas iyh
Forty fifth Street Bobov’s present Bais Medrash is in Lampard Grove, and the original (unity) Bais Medrash is in Egerton Road. They expect those now davening in Lampard Grove (45th St.) to be moving to their new Bais Medrash in Clapton Common. They also expect mispallelim from Egerton Road (48 St. and status Quo’ers) to join those in Clapton Common as is the the current trend.
Rumor has it that the shul will be named
Kahal Pubov.
It is R` Mordechai Duvid`s Chasidim. The comment about Egerton is evidently a mistake of this anti-religious newspaper. In London everyone, including R` Bentzion`s people, are happy that a longstanding disturbance in the centre of the area will finally be turning into a Beis Hamidrash.
10:37 – wrong, they will name it The Swunger…
10:44 AM,
Bad, really bad.
10:56 – not any worse than 10:37
ex-frummie 9:16PM. The reason that I,I,I, don’t like to use the term “I”, repeatedly is because “I” don’t focus on M”I”self!!!
Furthermore, your inquiry [and annoyance?] about the “DEAL” with all [of] the []{}()used in [my] posts, is PUZZLING to me! The simple reason [that I(note NOT, “we”) make extensive [and liberal] use of same, is, that those [bracketed], (parenthesized, (or parenthetized) [peripheral] inserts are not part of the main sentence. So, in order to keep the stream flowing the sub-parts are excised! (All of the above [explanations and elaborations) are on a conscious level! For the rest. (i.e. the reason for your annoyance and my persistence in doing so, a Psychologist should be consulted!)!!!
Lets forget all this nonsense,it only means there will be another shul to walk to for kedashim.
