In an annual report released today, Mr. Schumer gives the Bush administration a C- for its homeland security efforts, down from a C last year, and warns that the nation’s ports in particular require urgent action to prevent the smuggling of nuclear weapons into America.

“To beat terrorism you not only need a good offense, you need a good defense,” Mr. Schumer said at a press conference in Lower Manhattan. “Despite a national focus that was stated so strongly in the days after 9/11, Washington has left American vulnerable.”

Mr. Schumer’s report, which is based on assessments of homeland security by the Government Accountability Office and by independent observers, this year added a new category, energy security, that assesses efforts to protect infrastructure critical to producing and delivering energy, such as oil refineries and power plants. The report gave the Bush administration a C+ for energy security.

“While everyone’s been talking about high gas prices, high home heating oil prices, one attack would make the price go through the roof and really hurt our already damaged economy in very severe ways,” Mr. Schumer said. “Our nation’s precarious dependence on foreign oil would be made worse by any kind of domestic attack.”

The report also awarded a C+ for chemical plant security, a D for port security, a B- for nuclear security, a C for aviation security, a D for mass transit and truck security, a D for high-threat grant funding, and a C- for border security.

To beef up port security, Mr. Schumer said the government must quickly implement testing for nuclear materials on all incoming cargo containers at ports, citing Hong Kong’s security procedures as a model.

The senator said the report was the last his office would release, as its intent was to monitor the Bush administration’s response to security challenges in the aftermath of the attacks of September 11, 2001.

    Dear Chucky Shmucky,

I really enjoyed your comments bemoaning how unprepared we are in the event of an attack becasue I realized that as much as you (and Anon 1239a) blame the President for it, the fault lies at YOUR doorstep. You have tremendous gall for throwing it all at the President when YOU and your fellow Liberal Democrats constantly get in the way of progress.

I pray that one day soon the nation realizes the problems in this great country persist due to left wing liberal democrats like you and the rest of your party.

And were we to toughen security on all of these potential targets enough to rate an “A”, by putting more guards around everything and by closer inspection not only of trucks going into and out of these facilities but the people driving those trucks, many of whom are immigrants, legal or otherwise (and also scrutinizing the people with whom they associate and communicate), would Mr. Schumer and his Democrat pals then howl like hyenas about how the President is creating a “police state”, “violating civil liberties” and “demonizing foreigners”?

Look at the uproar they raised over efforts to use wiretaps to monitor the phone calls of KNOWN terrorist suspects — they raised the phony specter of the FBI supposedly illegally listening in to EVERY phone conversation of all 307 million Americans.

With this crowd on the one hand demanding better security and saying Bush is derelict in not providing it (and I’ll bet Schumer had nothing but good things to say about the level of our infrastructure security when Clinton was president, although it was far more porous than it is today) — while on the other hand undermining every possible means of providing it, it’s a miracle that we haven’t had another 9/11 on these shores.

Schumer has chaired the homeland security commision, and as such, it is his job to make us secure. The Dems enjoy a majority in the Congress, empowering them to make change, yet they constantly blame the president.

Can anyone tell me what Schumer has done about these problems? Has he allocated the funds needed? The president wants to build a fence along our border, but Schumer doesn’t let him, and then gives him a C- on border security.

Its time for term limits on the Senate and Congressional level.

Schumer is supporting Obama and has blocked anything that has Bush’s signature on it, so who is he to talk. Bush has been trying everything to keep us safe.

It’s “Demorats” that seem to be more concerned about the rights of terrorists than the protection of America.

How can u inspect every cargo coming from honk kong? You will have to import entire mexico to do it. And it will take years to inspect even one boat.each vessel carries thousands of containers, is he nuts? It will hurt the economy by making the consumer wait so much

Chuck Schumer reminds me of a Basset Hound. You know, those dogs who always look depressed. He never has a positive thing to say about anyone or anything, except for himself, of course.

We KNOW this is a miserable world & we are vulnerable. Try coming up with some positive self-aggrandaizement for a change! And can we please get rid of him? New blood!! With some enthusiasm & LIFE!!

Shumer with this you really earned your nickname “upchuck shmucky shumer”

What have you done to help our safety and security but say what someone else should do!!

Oh yea you oppose anything that Republicans and our great military (which you hate) have tried to accomplish.

If we get hit by terrorists the fault will be YOURS and Clintons and Pelosi and Reids for making it politics uber alles and not the safety and security of We the people.

And if we do get hit – you will be the first to call a news conference to point the finger at someone else.

You are a disgrace and a jerk.

The main reason we are dangerously vulnerable is because of that moron Schumer and his liberal cronies. Maybe if we send them all to Cuba, Russia and Iran, the United States will then be quite safe. Chucky Shmucky how about disappearing.

Schumer the blow-hard must have seen a TV camera and knocked an old lady out of the way to get to it, so he can spout his drivel.

It’s Schumer and his “useful idiot” democrates that make us vulnerable.

    Anon 324 & NYC,

Pray tell where do you get your words from? Oh, I know, PMSNBC!!

Should we start talking about Slick Willy Clinton for you? How ’bout Jimmy Carter? I see 444 days of hostages and a shmutz scandal here.

Just wait till we look back in history to see that Bush 43 was one of the best Presidents especially when it comes to protecting the country. Of course aside for everything else we know, Clinton is on his way down as the one who BLEW IT when it came to getting Bin Laden when OBL was being handed to him on a silver platter!
