Brooklyn, NY – Williamsburg cyclists are on a roll.

City officials said yesterday they won’t eliminate the Brooklyn neighborhood’s bike lanes despite concerns by the Hasidic community that they attract scantily clad hipster cyclists who go at dangerous speeds.
Scott Gastel, a Department of Transportation spokesman, said the lanes “increase safety.”
They hold hearings for public comment and concern, and then ignore them. So much for democracy. Where are all the voters in wmsbg that elected ‘their’ candidate. Let’s see them deliver.
YIDDEN THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD START VOTING FELDER AND OTHER ORTHODOX YIDDEN INTO OFFICE. Have we learned our lesson?
Old story. Hearings are a waste of time and just a formality they must go through.
good for the city. if people yidden want to live in cities with other people they need to take the needs and desires of non-jews into account. if they want to live in “kosher” neighborhoods, they should start more cities like kiryas joel, or move to eretz yisroel where they can have areas that are mostly or completely “kosher”.
Please read the recent posts on this. The issue is more one of increased traffic (due to losing one full vehicle lane) AND safety violations by the cyclists. The cyclists feel (incorrectly) that they are permitted to go through red lights, break off mirrors, and not stop for school buses.
I think this whole idea is a chillul Hashem. We yiden live in galus whether we like it or not. That means between goyim. If you want to live differently go seclude yourselves elsewhere. All you are accomplishing is looking horrible in the eyes of the goyim who don’t get where you are coming from. It is also time to stop staring at things you shouldn’t. keep your eyes down. That is the way a yid is supposed to walk anyway.
nu rabbi glanz you promised you will take care of this!!!!!!!
What’s with all the licking of bloomberg the aroinem can’t stop it?
Watch the picture change if it were Muslims saying they were offended!!!
Good, brooklyn is not Iran. You dont like what you see look the other way stop trying to change the world and make chillul hasham.
To anaon 11:21 – the picture would not change at all. Religious extremists exists in every religion. They should not be catered to AT ALL by the community at large, rather they must all accept a free society where people can do and wear whatever they want. If they don’t like it, let them go elsewhere, it is a free country. What would be next, no cars through the neighbourhood on Shabbat?
IT’S INTERESTING THAT THE REAL TEMIMASDIKA PERSON WOULD NOT NOTICE OR SAY ANYTHING. IT’S THE PERVERTS THAT HAVE TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR HANDS THAT NOTICE THESE THINGS. THEY OUGHT TO WORRY ABOUT THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STOP MAKING MACHLOIKIS. THEY ARE ALWAYS WORRIED ABOUT THE TZNIUS AND WHAT THE WOMEN ARE DOING OR NOT DOING CORRECTLY. ARE THE MEN SOOOO PERFECT.
How come no one is worried about you wife’s looking at some men in revealing shorts.
I can’t belive some of these comments. Just because we live among non jews means we have to give up our right to protest? No one is saying you can’t walk our streets or come into our stores. To force a bike lane on a neighborhood that doesn’t want or need it is wrong. The bikers can and do ride any street they want without making a dedicated bike lane.
Here they scream we should move to KJ, and upstate they don’t let us expand.
Which way you want it?
Hypocrites.
This is Great News….
Lets all start losing Weight..

I agree with you cause Felder was the one who got rid off all the tumeneh flyers that kept on being thrown at our door steps. Where was Hikind on this? Where was Dear on this? YES we lost an ehrliche yid that represented us the way he should.
I CAN’T BELIVE SOME OF THESE COMMENTS HERE. READ WHAT THE SFORIM SAY ABOUT SHMIRAS AINAYIM. JUST BECAUSE PEOPLE DRESS THIS WAY IN 2008 DOESN’T MEAN ITS RIGHT. 50 YEARS AGO NO NON JEW WOULD DRESS THIS WAY IN PUBLIC. ITS BAD ENOUGH WE HAVE TO SEE THIS PRITZUS WHEN WE WALK IN THE STREET DO WE HAVE TO LET THEM BRING MORE FILTH TO US THROUGH BIKE LANES. NO. NO. NO.
It’s a sick world and getting sicker. I think the main reason they want bike lanes is to be able to give more tickets!
How about in NYC where many lanes over the last two months have disappeared and can only be used by BUSES. 115.00 tickets on the rise wqith points for your tire even touching the white line.
And now with blocking the box? Oy gevalt! Blocking the box people deserve tickets big time but Bloomberg is not giving tickets out because it is right or wrong but doing it for revenue purposes. Now that is the problem.
And for the people that did not vote your IDIOTS.
The people that voted but not for Felder YOUR ALSO IDIOTS.
fed up.
We need the tznius police with all hashgochos on this biking issue. We need rabanim standing on the corners of Williamsburg deciding who is shmutz and who is not.
We should have a new vaad called the The shmutzeh Rebbehs who will be in charge of deciding what is shmutz and what is not when these cyclist come to town. These rebbehs should have a whistle blown every time they see things we should not see. A whistle that is loud enough to warn us to look the other way is what we need.
I would add to your statement Favish that he would be the best person to get bloomberg to change or remove the bike lane for us.
Lets remember that it was Felder who got involved for us about Mezizeh Bepeh and got the Mayor to change his mind.
They should make elevated bike lanes whereever they offend anyone. There should also be Mechitzeh grade cloth around these elevated bike lanes. With these elevated bike lanes the hipsters will soon find out that it is very hard going up the hills and down the hills on these tzneisdikah bike lanes. In no time at all they will beg for ground level bike lanes and will agree to wear Willy approved clothing. Another problem is mixed bike lanes. I will deal with that once the hipsters buckle and shape up.
Your all a bunch of NutCases
We are talking about Bike riding, not Dancing Naked in the Streets….

Your a2 faced hypocrite . your screaming about bikes and preetzus and you are blogging on the internet which is ten times worse according to your rabbis . So which standard do you go by? 50 years ago no one had internet and then why is it that you are blogging on the worst tumah in the whole wide world?
well the big problem is when a school bus stops the bikes don’t
there has been many cases where our kids get hurt by these bikes it is a big (sekone)
when is the kol korah coming out? I want to add it to my ridicoullos collection
Lipa you could make a concert already the ra-bonim have already with what to be busy.
For those of you who say the bike riders shouldn’t be allowed to ride through “our” neighborhood…IT IS NOT “YOUR” NEIGHBORHOOD!!!. This is America. Those streets don’t belong to you any more than the next person. They are paid for with taxes and the bike riders pay some of those taxes. You don’t own them.
does this mean that no bikes will ride on the street?
no the bikes will still ride on the street-and they WONT get tickets so why should the cars get tickets when they go on the bike lane and besides does this mean that bike lane will be like sidewalk will the police never drive on the bike lane
the obvious other issue here is that they want to take away a car lane from already crowded streets. where are those cars going ??
YIDDEN THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD START VOTING FELDER AND OTHER ORTHODOX YIDDEN INTO OFFICE.
Sorry but Felder would probly vote for the bike lanes as far as I know him and speacily if Bloomberg wants it.
Remember that most semi-naked bikers are semi-nakeed inthe summer whenmany many yidden are away. It is important to live in peace with our neighbors. We are just provoking them and if I were one of them I would deliberately dress as naked as possible as a protest. We cannot judge the goyish velt for their values just as we dont want them judge us.
We dont want them poking around in our schloct houses or examing our brisim. Lets try to be accepting of those whose cityh we SHARE and if we really cant stomachit then we should move to a secluded environment. Anything e3lse provokes anti-semitism.
I dont like seeing it either but then again it is a reminder of how much better we are. I think that most erliche yidden would view them as disgusting and turn away just as if they were looking at a dead animal. LOOK AWAY.
Hod do Willi people dress on vacation? Where do they go? just some food for thought!
For all of you who see an anti Semite under every rock, and treat this country as if it were 1908 Poland – just listen to yourselves – you are secure enough to DEMAND that bike lanes that serve the entire population be shut down because of tznius concerns . . . and then are outraged when the City does not roll over and sing Shema Yisroel on our behalf. What arrogant chutzpah – as on the subways, just keep your eyes where they belong, and thank HaKodesh Boruch Hu that we live in a country where you can run off your mouths the way you do.
In my opinion, our oposition to the bike lane never really was the pritzus it brought, but rather the congestion, increased chance of getting a ticket and stam the chutzpah of them taking our busiest Bedford & Wythe Aves.
Whoever was in charge of making the authorities aware of our opposition thought that they had a better case if we said that we oppose ‘scantily clad’ people strolling through our hood rather than the real truth of it simply bringing physical headaches with traffic jams etc.
Now don’t get me wrong, the pritzus problem is pretty real, but its nothing we didn’t have untill now. The chutzpah lays purely in the fact that yes, its our neighborhood and we all are against it, 99.9% of us (i wish this number would go down drastically) don’t ride bikes and still they don’t care, its something they (the politicians) wanted and was immediately implemented, to show another thing that they delivered.
Our case should be what it really is. The outside world would never yield to such a drastic move (as temoving a bike lane) based on the fact that ‘it bothers our eyes’. But if we show them the traffic it creates (for instance that when trucks make deliveries they triple park) and the fact that this is a neighborhood that (unfortunately) does not use bikes at all. Maybe they’ll have to listen. Plus we offer them Kent avenue in exchange. They anyway messed it up already big time. They may as well put a two way bike lane and Pooter an Eisek. But we under no circumstances should let them make one on Kent Ave. while they already have it on Bedford & Wythe.
You people who are chasidic and hate the STate of Israel should re-think your attitude and thank Israel. IF Israel did not win the 1967 War and give Jews some self respect in this country, you would not be walking around in your black clothes and making speeches about banning bike lanes in Williamsburg. Instead you would be shuffling around without a yarmulke in public and hoping they will not notice you.
in other words 9:16, look what Israel made out of those Chasiddic Jews. huh? shame on Israel that it put the hassids on the map, it should have never come to fruition for that alone, huh?
Pssst, I know, we’re of the same opinion. Israel’s independence is what killed us all jews.
Cangaroo, you are not making any sense. 9.16 is just saying that if not for the State of Israel which many Chassidim claim to despise, the Chassidim in the US would not have any status or power here in the United States. Israel’s independence is what gave Jews in the United States self-respect, including the Chassidim. The State of Israel empowers the Chassidim to use their influence more. Use logic, Cangaroo, and you will think more clearly.
1) Separate bike lanes for men and women.
2) All Chassidim should start riding bikes, so the local bike paths will be filled with tznius dressed Hassidim, others will look for less-crowded alternative routes.
3) Bring back horses, make special lanes for horses, donkeys, camels, llamas.
This bike lane has cut the car lanes in half on the most used avenues what a shame its ike closing 2 lanes on the george washington bridge and the lincoln tunnel on a friday afternoon in the summer and turning those lanes into only bike lanes
ELUL THOUGHT: Perhaps our (communal) disregard for the safety of our children (vs. molestors) has caused us to lose a level of HKB”H’s assistance in guarding the sanctity of our lives. We must ourselves seek to guard the sanctity of our nearest and dearest internally, before we expect an “above and beyond” standard of public tznius.
I recall that several years ago….. the city
stated that a woman can go topless if she
wanted.
Be grateful that no one has done gone topless
as of now. This is a public street….. vote
for who ever you want. No one has the legal
right to require a dress code here or any where
on public streets.
The complaint about a bike lane is B.S.
What about those women who wear tight pants and don’t ride bikes? Are you going to be happy when the Muslims or others complain and make it manadatory to not wear chassidic hats on the bus, train or street? Our rabbonim must educate the silly chassidim and teach them what is ikkar and tofail. The longer the peyos, the sillier the brain,it seems.MOVE BACK TO HE GHETTOS!-is that what you want? Go to Eretz Yisroel and settle in a Chareidi-only settlement. THIS IS THE USA!!. They letn us be free, but not to take over the country. STOP THE CHILLUL HASHEM before it is too latr,PLEASE!! There are so many ways to improve ourselves, let’s not not make others do it for us.
I think I’ll lobby for my neighborhood to keep out people I don’t like, too. I don’t like closed-minded religious nuts. Stay off my sidewalks!
Bring them here

I think he is saying in public it is not okay but in private it is okay
I’m very happy with this turnout.
This is AMERICA people! If YOU don’t like something, then YOU leave, don’t make the rest of the world change for your beliefs.
People can dress how they want to. How would you feel if people complained about the chassidish’s garb.
I’m Jewish, so this isn’t a “hate” post, or an “self hating Jew” post. This is my opinion, and the moment anyone starts throwing around the word, “anti semite” they make themselves look like fools. Grow up!
Sheesh!
What’s next, cars with a cross or fish bumper sticker, wont be able to drive through? It’s time to start looking, and doing for your own community, because while all the Rabbi’s are out making such a fuss over people riding bikes in the street not dressed to their liking, there are children getting abused in schools.
It’s time to get priorities in order!
So its an aveyrah to look at immodest women, but its not an aveyrah to drive those huge SUVs and mini vans and pollute the environment and destroy this world hashem gave us?
I personally bike everywhere I go- not only am i fulfilling the mitzvah of stying healthy, Im also helping keep the environment- our gift from hashem, cleaner.
So next time you decide to drive your range rover three blocks to the nerest grocery, try to appreciate those who bike to that same grocery and keeping your world and the ir your family breaths cleaner.
🙂
People in Wiiyburgh grow up! We live in America the big chulent pot of multicultural backgrounds. We are not in Isreal’s Meah Sharim.
Live! Don’t hate! We have enough haters out there and this adds to the fire that burns very strong in many.
Tznius issues, traffic issues..
Here’s a traffic issue-What about the little kinderlach who ride on the sidewalk with mommy watching from the stoop and bump into people walking without an appology from themselves or mommy?
Tznius issues- What about the men dressed in the livush who do inappropriate things in the public eye? Is that OK b/c they “look” pious.
Think of what Willyburgh used to look like all run down and look at it now.
