Sergeant Kennth Joyce of the Ramapo Police Department said that police were made aware of the situation just after midnight. According to the town’s Facebook page, the accident took place on the western edge of the county on Route 202 east of Cutler Court in the village of Montebello, not far from Harriman State Park.

“There is a big wooded area right near Route 202 and the park is right behind the houses,” Sergeant Joyce told VIN News.

Sergeant Joyce could not confirm the size of the bear or whether or not it is one of four that have been spotted on numerous occasions in the town.

Police have no information about the vehicle that struck the bear but said that it would be unlikely that the driver of the car would face any charges if identified.

Ramapo Police moved the bear to the side of the road where it was later removed by the town’s highway department.

Heartless people don’t stop when they hit people let alone a dumb animal.

The caption states “hit and run” which implies that the drive should have stopped and called someone. Perhaps the driver should have stopped so that the next-of-kin can be notified. For heaven’s sake, it was an accident with a wild animal that has no owner (unless it was really owned by Goldilocks.

Does anyone know what the law requires one to do in such a scenario?

I think the law requires you to stop when you hit an animal. Ask the next cop that pulls you over.

I like to think I am a law abiding driver. I would not stop anywhere near the animal once it is hit or not hit.
An animal in pain can strike out as well.
Perhaps the driver should have called 911 to report it.

The driver and passengers are lucky to be alive.
Before anyone doubts this go back to high school physics or go to Google and read how many people are injured or killed by deer standing in the road and being hit by oncoming cars.

Maybe I would report it because it should be removed from the road to avoid other cars hitting it and causing an accident. I don’t know if I’d hang around ’til the cops came, though. I never report hitting a squirrel. I guess it’s not big enough to cause any harm.

Given how close this accident scene was to Monsey, they could have gotten a chassidish shoichet to come to the scene and donate the meat to one of several local foodbanks.
