Sen. Jose Peralta and Assembly member Aravella Simotas propose that the Department of Motor Vehicles maintain a registry, establish safety regulations, and set minimum liability insurance coverage.
Drivers would have to register them with the DMV.
The legislators say the scooters have become part of the fabric of small businesses throughout New York City making deliveries. They say attempts to ban them haven’t worked, and accidents can create big liability issues.
Simotas says she’s heard from too many people about near misses and being hit by riders.
Under the proposed legislation, traffic infractions would be punishable by fines of $25 to $100.
way overdue. each should have to carry a liability policy as well. they should have to follow same rules as any other motor vehicles…gas powered or electric powered.
There already is a law requiring reflective vests with the name of the establishment to be worn. These vests, when present, have no name or the name is usually unreadable.
I am for rules and enforcement, the issue is that cops avoid getting involved.
I would ban the non-motorized bikes too,
First of all the comments of numbers 1 and 3 should be eliminated by VIN, they are racist comments said by IGNORANT people still living in the 1930’s. It is the same thing as if someone called them a JEWMAN.
That being said these motorized bikes need to be regulated and licenses and need to obey all the driving rules of the road, not to drive on sidewalks.
Chinaman is a racist term, it is like saying Jewman.
The cops should ticket those riding these motorized bikes as well as all cyclists who fail to obey traffic laws. Cyclists have to obey the same traffic laws as do motorists. I think pigs will fly before the cops issue them tickets.
So that if we don’t have enough unpaid tickets, we should add more unpaid tickets when the booting program will not even be able to help. There needs to be a better solution.
