EPA/Pavel WolbergIsrael – A number of rabbis are musing about the possible spiritual meanings behind Tuesday night’s rocket fired at Israel and have called upon residents in the area to strengthen their observance of Shabbat as a means of ensuring the area’s safety.

According to a report from popular haredi news website Kikar Hashabbat , the Sadigora Rebbe, who heads that hassidic dynasty, said Wednesday that “we have merited to see miracles since the rocket did not injure anyone or cause damage to property,” crediting this to the “thousands of Jews that observe Shabbat and the right to prayer [in Ashdod].”

The Sadigora Rebbe also took the location of where the rocket fell as a sign, since it fell close to the Big Fashion shopping mall, which is open on Shabbat.

He called on Israelis to strengthen their observance of Shabbat, and to “do everything necessary to stop the desecration of Shabbat that is threatening the safety of the city’s residents.”

“It’s now upon the residents to see this as a sign from heaven that Shabbat is the Mezuzah and the city’s protector.” Mezuzahs, which are placed on doorposts of buildings, are sometimes thought to protect buildings and their inhabitants from harm.

Meanwhile, the Rebbe of the Shomer Emunim hassidic dynasty weighed in on the rocket attack, saying that “Shabbat is the source of blessing and there is no doubt that in the merit of those on the stricter side of Shabbat observance, … as well as the prayers of thousands of the city’s residents…we merited to see God’s goodness directly.”

Because the smoke has the same significance as the smoke coming off of Shabbos candles

And so the infantilization of Judaism continues. With the proliferation of wonder rabbis, amulets, alleged segulahs, worshiping at the graves of rabbis, and self-styled sages who will tell us the “hidden” reasons for every mundane event on the face of the earth, it’s getting harder and harder to tell the difference between Yiddishkeit and Rastafarianism.

It’s a wonder that anyone can take a rabbi seriously anymore. I sure as hell can’t.

I am so confused. Isn’t it smartphones we have to worry about? And WhatsApp? Or was it hemlines and long sheitels, because any crisis is usually the women’s fault? Or was it moserim? I really need a clear guide that properly maps troubles and exactly what causes them.

The Rabbi is entitled to his opinion.
Of course if your an atheist, his opinion will not have much meaning. Yet he is entitled to voice his opinion!

I would have more respect for them if they made the comment about strengthening Shabbos observance for Jews everywhere, for all our protection and benefit. Playing the blame game and giving reasons for specific instances makes them seem foolish.

A look at everything that happening in the world is worthy of comment.

    Yirmiyahu Hanavi:
לשוא הכיתי את-בניכם מוסר לא לקחו
The Rabbi is taking heed of a passuk. Of course you go ahead and continue living your lives like things just ‘happen’ for no reason at all. It’s all ‘randomness’. That’s fine. But that’s not Judaism.

Maybe we’d have fewer atheists if more rabbis didn’t think they were angry prophets of doom.

The point is, you can either view events as random or you can find some meaning in them. The emphasis is not on “what G-d meant” but on what you can take away that enhances your life. Improving mitzvot and midot can only be a good thing, for all of us.

Maybe the rockets fell because of Chareidim assaulting IDF soldiers and fighting amongst themselves. Why look to others for what they are doing wrong. Look within yourself.

Just got back from Miron and I had this great revelation “the rockets happened because………. (Sorry, can’t reveal the secret I heard).
By the way, they have a great deal in Meron this week. Donate …. ….And you get 2 miracles for the price of 1.

It’s quite simple. Right now we are being attacked. Why don’t all of you try strengthening Shabbos observance. It can’t hurt (contrary to what some of you profess, unfortunately), even if that’s not the cause of the attacks. If that doesn’t work, then you’ll have proven him wrong. Before that you’re all talk, no proof. Hey, you never know! Oh, sorry, I forgot, I’m writing to people who do know.

This is interesting. If it was a lone rocket and did no damage, either we can think the enemy is getting to its limited end and lost in its resolve to do more harm or maybe it is a good sign that we must work harder on our yiddishkeit.

No jew should think that fearing G-d is less a prospect.

So this rabbinical impression has some dignity.

Let the fearful of G-d become more observant.

But of course, there is not shabbas observance without G-ds fear and G-ds love.

    So be orthodox!

The Houston Rockets are playing Golden State tonight in the basketball playoffs. I take this as a sign that the Gazans support the Rockets.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe used to say that we do not and cannot understand why the Holocaust occurred. I agree with this way of looking at it, and I cannot believe any Rebbe who blames a tragedy on e.g. not keeping Shabbos or tznius etc. Especially when the same Rebbe does not have enough common sense to not support paedophiles, even after they are convicted, and attack the victims as liers. I do not believe these Rebbes have that much Ruach Hakodesh to know in detail exactly why bad things happen to children etc.

The comments by so called religious Jews here are sickening. Do you believe that Hashem controls the world?
Miracles are happening all over Israel. The mall open on shabbas was not hit by one of these miracles. Why is it so hard to accept that Hashem may want us to observe shabbas better? Putting down the rabbanim is not going to fix the terrorist problem either.

The issue is not whether or not Hashem wants us to observe Shabbos “better”, the issue is that Chasidic rabbis are blaming the seculars again. It’s difficult to tell who demonizes secular Jews more, the terrorists in Gaza or the terrorists in Beit Shemesh.
