Monsey, NY - Rockland Board of Health Threatens To Shut Kosher Restaurant For Sanitary Violations |

Monsey, NY - Health inspectors will continue to monitor a Monsey restaurant that was fined for numerous health code violations and if the situation doesn't improve the county might consider revoking the establishment's license to operate, officials said at today's meeting of the Board of Health.
Conditions were so bad at European Homemade Foods, 82 Route 59, that health inspectors closed the restaurant down during a Jan. 29 inspection.
The restaurant was allowed to reopen a day later after the violations were corrected.
European Homemade Foods was also fined for unsanitary conditions in 2006 and 2004, according to records.
Aron Unger, a representative of the restaurant, reached a settlement with the Department of Health to pay a $2,900 fine for the most recent violations.
In other action taken at the monthly meeting of the Board of Health, fines were assessed against other people and businesses for violating the county's sanitary code.

This place in Monsey, was the original Kosher Delight. Supposedly, the owners moved their succesful venture to Brooklyn and the rest is history. The original Monsey location never fared as well. Who remembers the Zabel's?

In L.A. every food establishment has to post a letter grade in the front window. You know before you even walk in the door if the kitchen is clean or not. It's graded on a scale of 1-100. 90-100%= an "A", 80-89%= a "B", and 70-79%= a "C", if you get a C, you have 30 days to correct the serious violations, if they arent fixed they will shut you down......

Hashgachas don't really approve health conditions.
That's why our children are given full permission by their rebbes and parents and yeshivas to swallow as many chemicals as they feel like because there is an hashgacha on these "snacks."

I own a few kosher restaurants under very strict hashgocho. I always wondered why nobody argues with the health department when they impose violations, fines or close down a store. But if a hashgocho organization does anything of the such there is such a tumult!
When ever someone complains to me about the "restrictions" of kashrus I tell them the analogy with the health department. It quiets them rather quickly.
“LOCK & LOAD” I like the name.

Oy Gevald -- You got it wrong. This place used to be called Sabels. He was a real giant of a man, Mr Sabel o"h. I'm no suprised about these violations, but I got to tell you, they make the best kugel.

Do not be full of glee over the issues at agri for your fleish will be cooked if they go under. Shortages (they provide a MAJOR amount - upwards of more than 50% - of meat & poultry here in the USA!) followed by price increases will happen.

I would agree with Avraham Abba. In our community there is a general lack of consciousness about healthy vs. unhealthy food. It is common for mothers to give kids "pealach" filled with sweets and "nosh" which is just junk food which makes our kids fat and unhealthy. On top of which we don't get enough exercise in our frum community and we don't educate our kids about physical fitness. Some call it a goyish thing to worry about, but common sense and halacha tell us to guard our health.

My wife and I rarely eat out for two reasons - we what to know what we are ingesting, and we are price sensitive. By the time you factor in the va'ad cartel fees, I cannot see paying for overpriced slop. Plus, there are a lot of chemicals and other things I want to avoid.
B"H my wife and I live in an area that has many options for healthful, natural, organic, etc. foods. Many of thse stores carry a variety of products with reliable supervision. One health food store by me carries fresh glatt bison. I get a kick out of many non-Jews buying kosher meat because they believe in our rituals. Another store boasts about their kosher offerings, even though it's mostly non-Jews shopping there.
My wife and I are not afraid to cook. You can make almost any traditional Jewish dish in a more healthful alternative that the way our parents and grandparents made it. That includes baked desserts.
While we both have some pounds to lose, we do get out and excercise. I'm waiting for a Kol Koreh on that.

maybe they where kosher insects, some are, like grasshoppers, how do you know maybe they did check it out and it was kosher. Remember, all a MASHGIACH really looks for is, is it kosher or not, the rest they leave to government agencies.

The place in Monsey, was the original Kosher Delight, 30 years ago. It was owned by a heimishe yid named Glanz(?) who moved to Florida. There was a Sabel that died, I don't know if he was connected to that business and another Sabel that has also been in the food business, that is alive and well.

HI, I remember the European Homemade in the 80s. It was just as filthy then, as it is now..VNishmartem Me'od..between this, Elis bagel and the Shwarma place, Monsey is a filthy place to eat...go to Teaneck, much cleaner..thats what I do...
