The effort, called Operation Safe Stop, resulted in more than 1,000 tickets on a single day in April to motorists who drove around buses while children were being loaded or unloaded.

A ticket could cost up to $400 for a first offense, plus a court surcharge and five points on a driver’s license.

Authorities say an estimated 50,000 motorists pass school buses in New York state each day.

New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico says protecting children is a top priority.

Good. Fines are the only language some people understand.

How can a person live with the fact that he killed a child because of his negligence.
Also some bus drivers are the cause of this behavior because the law says that a driver can flag his hands for a car to pass.
Why do you let drivers wait to pass till a mother dresses her child and can’t make them ready for bus arrival.

So there’s this bus, stops on ocean ave in midwood every morning. He’s picking up a student in a wheelchair, requiring the utilization of a lift. There is no other child being picked up. He flashes his lights and stop sign. Four lanes of traffic come to complete stop for 5 minutes at least. During height of rush hour. Don’t jump down my throat, I wouldn’t even consider passing him, but this is knowing full darn well there is no crossing/running child = no danger. Abuse of “power?”

Maybe the reason people do it, while its wrong, is because often you see mothers nonchalantly bringing their kid out of the house 3 minutes after the bus has been out there waiting! And when they see a whole line of cars behind the bus being inconvenienced by their selfishness and lack of responsibility, they don’t even appear apologetic!
