Goshen, NY - The race for Orange County Surrogate Court is taking a detour into state Supreme Court, with the two candidates each filing suit over the result of last week’s Independence Party primary.

Republican Robert Onofry won the right to appear on the crucial small-party ballot line.
But Democrat Stephen Hunter sued, asking Supreme Court Justice Joseph G. Owen to throw out the results because polls closed 15 to 20 minutes early in the Village of Kiryas Joel on primary night. Hunter also contends that there were “obvious irregularities” at other polling stations.
Onofry fired back with a countersuit, asking Owen to order three disputed absentee ballots to be opened and counted.

1. If the polling place closed early it is a legal violation and the perpetrators should be prosecuted.
2. Funny how since Al Gore tried to steal the presidential election via the courts - Democrats all over the country keep bringing election results before the bench to steal their position - seems that Democrats are sore loosers and don't believe the peoples right to vote and choose.

Judge Hunter would not have won, anyway! [if the polls in KJ stayed open longer]! It would only enhance the victory of the other candidate, Judge Robert Onofry!!!

Why is 15 minutes such a big issue. Let them take the average for the entire day and apply it to the poll results.

Money Hungry - I have a better idea, why not just open the polls for an hour in the morning and then take the average and apply it to the rest of the day.

Zichmich - how do you compare 14 hours 45 minute, that the polls were open, to the one hour in the morning that your trying to act smart about.
If the candidate complaining is short by 90% of the vote, then the 15 minutes of early closing would not make him a winner.

If the law says that the polling place has to be open to a specific time then it should be. Those laws exist for a reason.

OK I don't live in KJ but If I was told my local polling place is open to 8:00 and I showed up before 8:00 and found it closed I would be pissed, and may well file a complaint, Yes the last few voters probably won't change who wins or looses, but the point is that taking away people's right to vote is a pretty serious thing.
Votes and elections get challenged by both parties,

There are many times I have gone to the polls very late on the way home from work knowing they would still be open. I would definitely feel my rights were violated if the polls closed early. Also, different types of people might vote in the evening than can come during the day.
If 15 minutes aren't important, then why don't we end Shabbat and turn on the lights 15 minutes early?
For the American system to work - it's amazing how many times there has been a change in power from one party to the other with no riots or coups -- everyone has to have faith that voting laws and the system is scrupulously maintained. It's not just about 15 minutes, its about principles.
