As previously reported on VIN News, the bill was introduced by Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee of Suffern in an attempt to monitor decisions made by the school board, all of whom are private school parents and have been charged with neglecting the needs of the district’s public school students.
The Assembly bill, A5355, had 23 cosponsors and an additional nine multi sponsors and also called for a five year improvement plan to be drafted for the embattled district, where yeshiva students outnumber their private school counterparts by a ratio of three to one. Supporters hope that an identical bill will pass the Senate before the current session ends on June 17th.
Opponents of the bill charged that it effectively undermined the entire democratic process by overturning the rule of a board that was fairly elected by a majority of voters in the district.
The plan also called for a five year improvement plan to be drafted for the embattled district, where yeshiva students outnumber their private school counterparts by a ratio of three to one.
NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo indicated last week that he supports the bill.
now lets hope it passes the senate and Cuomo can sign it before he is indicted.
Such helige, frum people, these school board members…and all those who support them. Embarrassing.
Sad day for jews in east ramapo district
Proof that democracy is a sham, and that Anti-Semitisism is alive and strong in NYS
Crazy, this is not a fluk board , this is a voluntary board that has been elected year after year by registered voters … The only oversight needed in this state is of the assembly which is corrupt.
I hope ER voters remember Ellen Jaffe when she is up for re election.
Woo hoo! Let’s get this corrupt board under control!
Unfortunately, some of the advocates for the students are being threatened and harassed. Hopefully, the Yiddish posters will be investigated and indicted.
is a coincidence that the same sex “marriage” bill also passed with 80 votes.
I doubt someone will find in the past few decade more then 10 bills that passed with only 80 votes
“To our embarrassment our brothers in New Square and the rest of her assembly district voted for numerous times getting the full “merit” of her support for same sex “marriage”
Maybe we will have less suicides now.
