    According to the military, a car approached the checkpoint in the Jordan Valley and a gunman from inside the car opened fire at the soldiers. The army said soldiers returned fire, killing the man. No soldiers were wounded in the incident.

    The military provided no other details on the identity of the attacker beyond saying that he was Palestinian. Officials in the West Bank had no immediate details and no militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

    The man’s body remained on the side of the road at the scene of the shooting, and a military ambulance took the body away hours later.

    The Jordan Valley is an area in the West Bank under Israeli control, bordering Jordan.
