New York - Officials are expected to announce that New York's Tappan Zee Bridge will be replaced rather than repaired.

The state Transportation Department, which has led a years-long study on what to do about the aging bridge, has scheduled a "major announcement" Friday about the span, which links suburban Westchester and Rockland counties.

In recent years, officials have hinted that it would cost no more to replace the 53-year-old Hudson River bridge than to refurbish it and keep it safe for the 140,000 vehicles that cross it every day.

The DOT, the state Thruway Authority and the Metro North Railroad also are likely to announce what form of mass transit — buses, light rail or railroad — the new Tappan Zee would accommodate.

Republicans are not going to rebuild our infrastructure. It's their whole "small government" religion.

If they are building a new bridge, it better be a COOL bridge! Maybe like the one they have a picture of on the internet (probably photoshoped) of a bridge that starts as a bridge and mid river it becomes a tunnel. That would be really cool and worth paying $7.00 to use.

It is very important to realize that a bridge does not have an unlimited life. This hopefully will set a precedent for the replacement of other bridges and infrastructure. The old bridge is too valuable to just throw out, so it should be kept as a spare bridge to be moved around on a as needed basis. Suppose a bridge near Albany New York is beginning to shuckle, the can move the old Tappan Zee Bridge and take the old one to a bridge shop for repairs. After a few years there will be many spare bridges, perhaps one bridge for every man woman and child. In fact these bridges can be set up in the middle of Ocean Parkway and a toll can be charged. You see, Ocean Parkway souds like water and if there is water a bridge is necessary. No one will complain about the toll if you don't raise it too often. I think this one is a winner. Shoin.
