In a news release, the Secret Service and National Park Service say the spikes are a temporary security measure until a long-term solution is found.

Installation begins Wednesday and is expected to continue for about six weeks.

The final design for a permanent security improvement will be submitted in the fall to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts and National Capital Planning Commission.

Last September, a Texas man was able to climb over the fence and run deep into the executive mansion. In April, a California man was arrested after scaling the fence and getting onto the White House lawn.

Will they get Gomez Addams to sharpen the spikes?

Those temporary spikes on the White Hosuefence, are merely window dressing. The U.S. Secret Service is going to have to improve on its personnel, as numerous problems have arisen in recent years. When the White House fence jumper made it into the White House, he was confronted by a single Secret Service Agent, who was a short female. The intruder beat her up, and continued on his way, before being stopped by other agents. Shouldn’t the entrance to the White House have been guarded by some muscular, tough individuals, experienced in combative techniques? The intruder should have been stopped before he made it to the White House entrance; since he wasn’t, he should have been stopped, once he got his foot in the door. To this date, the Secret Service has never revealed why the intruder was able to overcome the Secret Service agent inside. We lucked out that time; the spikes on the White House fence, will do very little to change the mentality of the Secret Service, which desperately needs improvement!
