“Yes, the rocket was fired from Sinai,” the source said.

Israeli police said the rocket landed in an open area causing no damage or casualties. In the past few days Egypt has fought fierce battles with Islamic State in the Sinai peninsula, which borders the Gaza Strip and Israel..

Palestinian militants have fired rockets in the past few weeks over the Gaza border into Israel, which has largely been quiet since the 2014 war between Israel and Hamas, the Islamist group which controls Gaza.

Israel has accused Hamas of helping Islamic State in Gaza, an allegation Hamas has denied. On Friday the military said that as a safety precaution it had closed a southern highway, part of which runs along the Egyptian border.
