Fallsburg, NY - A Sullivan County grand jury has handed up felony indictments against Fallsburg’s fire chief and his uncle in connection with an Aug. 29 arson at the Skopps bungalow colony on Laurel Avenue.
James Smith, 33, a longtime volunteer fighter, and his uncle, Edward Smith, 44, face charges of third-degree arson and burglary and fourth-degree conspiracy. James Smith has been additionally indicted for official misconduct.
Authorities allege that James Smith, the caretaker at Skopps, instructed his uncle on how to make the fire look electrical. They believe he wanted to set the fire so the department could get some training.
