    Newly released photos from the U.S. National Archives show the immediate response to the worst attack on U.S. soil. A documentary group had requested the photos under the Freedom of Information Act.

    In the photos, then-U.S. President George W. Bush met with senior cabinet members at the President’s Emergency Operations Center in the White House. Among them, Vice President Dick Cheney… Secretary of State Colin Powell… National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice…

    They were all gathered there almost 14 years ago. The attacks that day killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Washington and Pennsylvania. The dramatic events would go on to shape the following decade with two wars fought and a global hunt for militants from al Qaeda.
