West Bank – Abbas Advisor Dismisses Reports Palestinian Authority President Is Planning To Resign

(AP Photo/Majd Mohammed, File)‎West Bank – Political advisor to Abbas Nimer Hammad, dismissed as “Israeli rumors” a Channel 1 report Sunday that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was planning to step down from his post in two months.

    According to Channel 1, Abbas’s surprising announcement of retirement is due to fatigue.

    Speculation for the 80-year-old’s reported plans to resign also center around his failure to make progress in peace negotiations with Israel.‎

    Hammad said that the PA has become accustomed to such rumors coming from Israel. He claimed that the rumor was part of an Israeli attempt to “disrupt” the work of the PA leadership.

    He probably does not plan to resign. He definitely does not plan to run for reelection.
