Washington, DC - Rabbi's Van Proves An Unorthodox Getaway Car for Bank Robber |
|
Washington, DC - A bank robber was looking to steal a getaway car and had a choice of two minivans parked outside Rabbi Shmuel Herzfeld's house in Washington.
One was a nondescript silver Toyota Sienna, the other an old Dodge Caravan decorated with Stars of David and sporting a roof-top ad for a synagogue. Guess which one the robber took.
"I don't know what he was thinking," Rabbi Herzfeld said. "He thought he would blend right in?"
Police say the robber used the van when he held up a Commerce Bank in suburban Clinton, Maryland, just hours after Rabbi Herzfeld discovered it was missing.
The 15-year-old vehicle, a former taxi donated to the Orthodox synagogue by the owner of a cab company, had been used as a cruising advertisement for the synagogue by its energetic young rabbi, known for his offbeat promotional ideas.
Aside from the Stars of David and contact information for the synagogue on the doors, the former taxi's giant roof-top cruising light had been draped with an ad for the synagogue along with a photo of a shofar, a ram's horn Jews have used since biblical times.
On the rear of the vehicle was the invitation: "Join us on the high way."
"I think he took it literally," said the rabbi.
Police say a man wearing sunglasses and a cap held up the bank soon after the van was stolen.
The robber has not been caught. The van was found in a ditch a few kilometres from the bank. The only item missing was the roof-top cruising light.
Rabbi Herzfeld is taking no chances when the next synagogue car is decorated. He's adding the commandment: "Thou shalt not steal."

Is this the "so-called" Rabbi who is spearheading PETA, Unions, etc. etc. etc. campaign to 'malign' Kosher meat and ensure that prices will continue to soar for anyone wanting to keep kosher in the United States.
Even unwittingly you are a "mesaye l'dvar aveiroh" - very fitting for erev Yom Kippur!

The Ganav was probably hungry for some good Treife food after all the hard work.. He figured that in Herzfeld's car.. and knowing that this so-called Rabbi only makes big deals about ethics when it comes to anti-union Kosher manufacturer's he figured he'd found the right car!!
